Why do some people have chickens? ugh! I just replied on a forum where someone was feeding their chickens scratch for feed and were worried about why they weren't laying yet at only 21 weeks. I told him/her first to feed the chickens real chicken food, not treats, and that it's normal for chickens not to be laying quite yet at 21 weeks. She asked about their crowns getting red and I had to tell her it's a comb/wattles. Do people really just jump right into hobbies without reading anything at all? I feel so sorry for her animals!

I finally got another teensy egg out of those crazy Exchequer Leghorns of mine! And it only took eight freakin' days since we found the first two! Here it is next to a Welsummer egg and a beer bottle for comparison:

And my sweet boyfriend has been working himself like a dog to get all the free pallets broken down, but he's almost finished! Soon it will be time to start building!

Also, of interest for anyone building coops or other projects, now or in the future! It's called Zero Landfill. Architects, interior designers and construction folk contribute their design samples, surplus materials, and other stuff, letting the general public take what they can use, for free.

Yeah, Jake suffered the same fate, but he still tries to romance my leg from time to time.

Problem is, even if man & woman parts are removed, their urine still has their sexes' smell.
So a girlie fixed cat will still smell like a girlie cat.
And males will still come a'callin.
Same with fixed males, other males will come a'callin to fight.
The fighting can run your cat off.....the bigger fertile Toms will be awfully mean & nasty.

I would love a jersey Giant roo
Want me to save ya one ?
Say it, and it will be done !
I have 3 Maria Hall BLUE cockerels, and cannot decide which to keep, and 1 Black.

Extra cool, is the cocks are 15+ pounds at maturity...and will take no guff.
Good that they are also very people orinted...I move amongst them and have a hard time getting them out of my way to walk !!

Here's an idea for that chicken dinner for small families.
Corn on the cob, as everyone knows goes very well but what a pain in the butt to prepare. Try this.
Take a fresh ear of corn or two (DO NOT HUSK THE CORN) and place in a glass pie plate and stick it in the micro. Cook 2 min on high and rotate to other side and cook for about 2 min (depend on your micro).
Take out of micro (with oven mitts). cut off bottome of corn. Grasp the tassel, silk and all and squeeze like a tube of toothpaste. Cob will slide out with out any silk/hair on it. Cut it as you wish and serve.
Also makes a great snack.
(corn steams from its own moisture content and leaves can be harvested for tamales.)
Try it, you'll like it. I promise

Your glass tops look like storm door glass inserts from the pics. Am I wrong about that?
Yes. The tops I used are from a 70 something X 36 " dual aluminum framed window...HEAVY bugger.
The man was tossing them & putting in vinyl.
I made this one out of one side of the window, took the frame apart & DH made another hot frame from the other stationary window.
ANYONE sees ANYONE giving away dual glazed aluminum windows (due to upgrading) Please snag the windows !
They are excellent for this process !!!

Then block off half the run & gate it.
So when you are home you can open the gate & let the flock in the remaining uncovered section.
When you are gone, keep them in the covered section.
I have a few 50 X 100 foot nets...they exist.
bad part is SNOW.
Yes Mother !!!

The hawks don't seem to bother my big girls. I don't have any plans for more babies this year except the seven Bantams that are due to hatch on Saturday from your buckeye. I do have some covered area where my DD ducks were. that's were the rest of the babies ran too. they have learned that they can get under the barn too
