I just found a little clutch of 10 super cute small green eggs! They were in the grass and wet, think they could hatch???
Maybe...what are they, song bird eggs ?
If so, they probably won't hatch as songbirds lay in spring (so they may explode

Oh, such a relief! Now all we need is them to hatch vigorous, lively, and the opposite sex ratio from the group in May.

I just spent a half hour pulling Hamburg waterproofing back together; I didn't realize until today but the cows had pushed the fence around getting to the last green grass, and in doing so had knocked the roof supports to heck. So instead of whatever else I thought I was doing tomorrow, I've got to fix that.

Got a NASTY storm coming in...it is seriously DARK HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Supposed to be 3/4 to 3" of rain here on the coast (we had 3/4" yesterday DH informed me)
AND lovely 50-65 mph winds (I bet Illia is hating this storm !)
AND to top it off, chance of lightening...YIPPEE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am hiding !

I barely got the roof plastic re-hung, mostly because I had to remove the layer of 2mil that was the original rain cover for the perch; absolutely filthy from dust, now, but had to come in and eat, especially because, when I was pocket-packing, I forgot to put any snack in and ended up scraping bottom on my blood glucose.

Yeah, I've been watching that chunk of weather heading toward you since 7:40; looks as if we're getting slammed again, too. Baaachus is seriouly displeased that he's been penned up for three days in a row, but he loathes heavy rain, so there you go. The chickens AND the sheep blame me for the weather, as always.

(And just now the rattle of big rain-drops on the skylight in the dining room).

(This is my standard satellite animation for daily use. They may have changed, but both weather.com and wunderground.com used to have only continental views and the Atlantic Hurricane satellite so I stopped visiting them).

What kind of thermometer do you guys use in your brooders? Right now I'm using a meat thermometer (oh, the irony... and their future in-garage dust bath will be a roasting pan... LOL... yes, there are times that I find humor in the most inappropriate things). The meat thermometer works fine, except one of the chicks have taken to it as a pillow. When chicks sleep on the meat thermometer, you don't get accurate readings.

I use a wired indoor/outdoor OR I use a wireless.
That way I can put the reciever in the kitchen & know what the temp is in the brooder/incubator...but fair warning...the chicks LOVE to peck the little tiny red sending unit out (that is attached on the end of the wire) and then it is useless....

So I make sure (now) that the end of the wire where this sending thingy is, is duct taped to the brooder wall.

You could dry them out and try them. Are you thinking incubator? Or putting them under a hen.

The eggs I recently hatched had been refrigerated for a few days.

I was just going to put them under my broody hen, but of course, when I went out there she was gone?!

I might see if my friend down the road has anyone broody.

Smile pretty for the Chicken Rustler...

The one standing tall, 2nd in from the left, is the 5-toed crow. The one on the right has 5 toes, too. The two with the white spots on their heads have 4-toes.

GAH! Invader chickens!

On one hand, I don't have to worry about spilled grain attracting rodents, because they're cleaning it up like feathery vaccum cleaners. On the OTHER hand, they're also eating every bit of the lemon balm which is Elvis's favorite green.

And on the OTHER other hand, I'm worried about diseases and parasites, although since the Redwinged Blackbirds overfly everything and the (editorial comment withheld) geese seem to be back that's probably a lost cause anyway.

I don't have time to chase them out, and as a result they're getting to the point where I have to worry about tripping over the little blighters. It's tempting to set a trap for them, but it would be WRONG and anyway I only want one of the cockerels.
