Found this one which sounds simple..... I've not tried it yet.
Green Tomato Pickles
8 quarts or 12.5lbs (approx) of tomatoes (it calls for 1 Peck)
Vinegar mix
1 quart of vinegar
3 1/2 - 4 cups of sugar (2lbs)
Spices
mustard seeds (wet in water not dry)
cinnamon (table spoon added to quart of vinegar)
cloves
Cut tomatoes in 1/4 inch slices
Boil in salted water until tender
Drain thoroughly
Put slices in jar, sprinkle spices and mustard seeds between layers
Heat vinegar, cinnamon and sugar in a pot until boiling then take off heat and
Pour hot Vinegar mix into jars of the sliced tomatoes and spices.
This is a old recipe that I've not tried yet.....
I don't see why you could not use a Bread & butter recipe for green tomatoes...I use summer squash & cucumbers, bells (sliced) and white onion in mine.

I had read that dirt under deep litter was desirable, because microbes in the soil help the deep litter method to work better. Confused now. What do you all do if you have dirt floors in your coop?
I build a floor, high enough to keep the rain & moisture out.
Gases given off by composting materials can irritate chicken's air scas...and make them ill.

What kind do you raise?

I'm starting to get the bug to get back into discus but only one tank this time. until I get a pair.
I love using the water I change out on plants. Big difference in growth.
They are the most gorgeous fish !!!!!!!!!!!

Like that never has happened with chickens

When I was watching the girls today, I noticed Lyle picking up some unknown food item. As soon as he grabbed it and lifted his head, Muffet snatched it from his beak. He looked slightly puzzled as to where his prize went.

I love watching the chickens stealing food from each other. Makes me laugh... probably not them though!

Oh wait!! I did save the article on the DL method!! Yay!

This article is really what made my mind up about trying the DL method. I'm sure I'm not doing it perfectly, but it's working well so far.
I have seen ones that "rotovate" the litter & produce great microbial action to digest the nitrites...others not so good.
I prefer my covered wooden floor, stays dry, and less humidity inside means less condensation & frostbite.
That's just me.
