Watch out with purina!!!!!

Sulfa meds can cause more bleeding to occur during treatment. Amprol/corid powder is what you may want to use first at 1 teaspoon per gal for 7 days, skip 21 days and then treat w/ Sulfadimethoxine at 1 once per 2 gallons for 5 days, skip 21 days then start again utilall birds are at least 5-6 months old/laying.(never use 2 sulfa drugs at same time, or for longer than indicated.)

IMO DE does not kill internal parasites. It may help keep the load down (if used as a preventative), but will not destroy an infestation or problem like this.

Double-check the dosing on the particular package of Sulfadimethoxine you buy. There is one 3.7 oz. package of powder that says it is supposed to be mixed with 50 gallons of water, so the above dose rate would be much too intense.

I added the note so that anyone searching for dose info on Sulfa meds could be guided to check enough to not mis-dose based on an old recommendation that might not apply for them. Sulfa meds are available in both powder & liquid forms. The concentrations of the same Sulfa med in different forms & packages also can differ--so you have to be extra careful to not use a wrong prescription for the particular form you are using.

I've just re-started one of my hens on a sulfa med & had come across this old info while trying to verify dosing, and was wanting to pass on the caution to others.

But I realize the original poster no longer can use the info & generally don't post on old threads unless I think future 'search' readers will benefit.

The Sulfadimethoxine powder I've used ( I think it was Durvet) came out to 1/2 teaspoon per gallon. I've seen another called Dimethox, and it is a liquid. I've never used the liquid. I have noticed that what Cocci strains Amprol/Corid can't eliminate, Sulfadimethoxine will. Sodium Sulfamethazine is supposed to be much harder on a birds system than Sulfadimethoxine, according to what I've read.
