Question for the awesome minds at BYC, I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong. I have 2 watering stations, one is an igloo cooler converted to a 4 nippler drinker and 1 is a Harrison farms 3.5 gallon 4 nippler waterer. So here's the question. In the south Texas heat we set out additional "dishpans" to be sure there was enough water NOW the 10 girls are NOT drinking from the nipples. I realize water is water but I'd like them to drink clean clear cool water. Normally the humidity is higher than the temperature, the open to the air "dishpans" can turn green before your eyes...suggestions or advice will be greatly APPRECIATED

Chickens don't seem to mind dirty water. They will go for the easiest water available. Mine always drink their pans empty before going for the trough water in their coop. I rinse out the pans every morning and put fresh water in them, but they are still pretty dirty at the end of the day. As long as they are drinking plenty of water, maybe you don't need to fill the nipple waterer up quite as much or maybe you won't need it at all.

Dirty water tastes best!
My summer outsider waterers are in the shade, which helps keep them slightly cooler, and with less algae. I do rinse them out every couple of days, at least, in part to kill the mosquito larvae.
Watch your chickens! They will drink out of a puddle first, every time.

Mine go for spillage first. Little dirt won't hurt.

You can get a 3 gallon waterer, like one a dispenser one, and get manna pro water protector, and put that in the water. I like water dispensers, because it is harder for them to kick dirt in them, you can hang them up to keep that from happening too! Plus it holds a bunch of water! Like this-

That particular waterer is not recommended by the manufacturer for hanging. The handle is just for opening to refill.

Those are best put up on cinder blocks to keep kicked dirt out of them.

I want to get a horizontal nipple waterer that I can hang inside the coop for the really cold days this winter. I got the one with the little cups, and the cups were full of shavings by the end of the first day. I'm looking into the regular HNs to replace the cups. Does anyone know, is the threading the same? Unscrew one, screw in the other?

I replaced water cups with horizontal nipples. Holes were identical.
