it was a case of no one knowing what they were doing... In MY opinion.... The caretaker that was killed was tasked to take a kayak out to their breeding island to feed them from what I understand. The man upset the male and the men lost his paddle. the Male swan then managed to keep the man under water and the man drowned.What?!? I know swans can break bones with their wings, but kill a grown man? How the heck could that happen?
I've been thinking about swans for a couple years. They are beautiful, but there are a lot of drawbacks, too. A few weeks ago, I spent a couple hours on the phone with a lady who has swans. She was very helpful - gave me a lot of info and a lot to think about. She said they are definitely not birds you want to let kids around. That's my main hesitation.

If I had to be in a boat around a gander or male swan... I'd want a flat bottom boat that they couldn't scare me into flipping and never attend a breeding pair on the water alone. Humans are made for land not water.
