My plan is to plant forsythia at the 4x4 posts and then use the canes that come up as part of the fence. Or, I have these cherry trees that spread I thought of using them. I promised myself earlier no to plant anything that wasn't edible. Or, I could plant hazelnut. Those are cheap and spread, just thought of them. Ha. I might do that. I am glad to share, because I get to think out loud with yall.

I plan to plant this type in a one acre pasture for my chickens. I want to keep it in the center of the pasture. If I bush hog it once or twice a year, can I keep it in that area?

Well you see with the running bamboo, it travels underground and can travel that way for quite a way, then it springs up vertically. So after mowing it, the leaves of it that are down at grass level after mowing it will still nourish the roots. I am having to pull the leaves off at the ground level over and over to try to starve the roots. More leaves come back and I keep fighting it.

Hazelnut trees are excellent firewood, and can be coppiced easily. We have them here on our land and I LOVE them. The squirrels get all the nuts though.

You used to be able to buy 50 seedlings in a bundle from Arbor Day Foundation.

coppiced is a tree such as a williow that is cut back so that it produces new growth that is long, slim and limber to weave into things like baskets and wattle fencing. Some times it was tied together to make brooms.

Here is one description - I like the diagram there. That is exactly how the hazelnut trees look around here. Giant clumps of branches and the tree won't suffer if you take a few of them.

Does it crowd out things that are growing under it? I have some weeds that I don't want, but I wondered if it would crowd out everything under it.

The Hazelnut? No grass grows right up pretty much next to the base of it, even though there are a lot of branches coming out of the ground. It is kind of a messy looking tree. You can train it to be a single trunk if you want it to look really good, though. The hazelnut orchards do this.
