I hope you can trap it.Befriend it with treats over time, and then take it somewhere. If you can not catch it I hope SSS will be possible.

I would not even waste my time with the owners.Owners know they need to train and confine a dog. Escapes should only occur 1 time and after that I consider a dog fair game for whatever you decide for them...when they are on your property.
Talking to neighbors will just result in a NFH situation.People also know there is an increased risk of injury or death when they allow pets to roam. They are shocked and angered when it happens, but they know it can happen-just never think it will happen to theirs.

It may not be ideal but my kids have seen me deal with animals. My kids know that uninvited animals in the yard will be dealt with.*CUTE * animals are no exception to the rule.

Temp solution is some bear mace.Shoots far.Soak 'em.

I don't always SSS. I once had a strange dog show up trying to get into the chicken run. He was friendly enough that I could catch him by the collar------no name or number. So I used permanent markers to draw targets on his sides and forehead between the eyes. I then chased him off. Must have worked, haven't seen him since.

Could you take the dog to the pound? If they have to pay a fine to get their dog back it 'may' make them be more careful about letting it run loose...not likely, but maybe.

I like the paint ball approach will sting the dog and give owners a heads up of what will come next-in fact if you can get a hold of the dog-leave a note on his collar saying the next time it wont be paint balls-keep it on a leash!

I had a problem with a new neighbors dog just a few weeks ago. He was very large but very friendly to me and my dogs but when he saw the movement of the chickens he coudnt resist. I solved that problem with a couple large loud fireworks and I havent seen him back in the yard yet.

I need a bigger trap to fit it in. The animal control loans out the same size raccoon traps that I already have. I'm somewhat opposed to purchasing an expensive trap for one occasion. ESPECIALLY because I have my suspicions about where my stolen raccoon trap went to (cough cough, toldja the neighbors weren't nice)
Lead is far cheaper.
Might ask my grandpa if he still has that old .410 probably safer for the neighbors than my .22

That is a bad situation. We had a problem about 3 months ago with a stray dog. Came in the morning and broke into the coop. I was alerted by my dogs. He got away but not with out killing 12 of my hens. Did not even eat them just broke their necks. Well anyway he got away that morning. But he came back that night for more. He is now SSS. Do not like to do it but everyone on here pays good money for their chickens and all the time and love we give them. Some things just have to be done. I don't say do it unless you feel like your birds are in danger. But do what you have to to protect your birds. People like that give pet owners bad names. I have rescued 4 dogs and they never go after my chickens. Good luck

Yes, lots of dogs come by to visit and I've really not had a lot of dog problems, considering how many are around town. I watch them on the game camera of course. I know they visit often and I've not lost a bird, neither have I seen them chasing birds on the camera.
But this new dog I have both actual visual accounts and picture accounts of it chasing my birds. That is the difference. I'm not gonna wait for them to die. The law says I can shoot for "running livestock" as does the city's animal control ordinance.
