Got a new grandchild coming you say? Welp, then you are gonna need some ducklings. Ducks and kids, they just seem to go together.

Ok- here's what I have coming from Ideal- order to be shipped April 2nd:

10 dark egg layer assortment, pullets
10 ameraucanas, straight run
5 gold laced wyandottes, straight run
3 black australorps, pullets
2 buff orpingtons, pullets

Changed my mind and decided no ducks this year.

We ordered from Ideal today as well:

Embden Geese (1 Gander) - sister has a female that has been a lone with just the chickens
Single Comb Nankin (St. Run)
Black Tailed Buff Jap (St. Run)
Rhode Island Reds (Pullets)

Before we found this site we placed the order from someplace else (Splash Rosecomb, BTBJap, Campine, Mille dUccle, RRI) ...hopefully we will turn out okay - since it has become a family project. We will go back to Ideal though after reading all of your posts. Sister already had Black Cochins, Silver Dutch, Black Silkies, and White Leghorns - her Black Cochin Rooster just won a 1st place - this is first year showing and WL Pullet and 2 Roosters have placed first and then several 3rd and 5th - so we have been proud. Not quite ready on the Silver Dutch and Silkies - Silkies are just babies and still learning standards required on the Silver Dutch.

Louisiana just doesn't seem to have the resources as many of you have spoken of - so maybe we can start new respect and traditions.

Thanks to BYC and all of you for IDEALPOULTRY. See you in the posts!

I have been looking around for a little while since I am getting 2 Top Hats from a class project at my school, I figured it would be a great time to convince the wife that we should start raising chickens with a baby on the way. So, you guys convinced me that Ideal was the way to go. I ordered 2/15: 2 RIR, 2 Buff Orp, 2 Silver Laced Wydandottes, 2 Ameracaunas, 2 Cuckoo Marons. All are pullets, whatever roos they send will be okay with me I will decide which to keep when they get here. I have delivery set for 3/19, I am off from school that week and figured it would be a good time to get them since my life will get much busier 2 weeks later with our child due.

My Ideal order arrived today. I ordered a pair of Tolouse Geese (1 male, 1 female). They were shipped on Wed 2/13/08 and arrived at my local post office this morning (2/16/08). Because of the cold (been in the 30's here during the day) I was a bit worried about them getting too cold in shipment. Ideal included 12 chickens to keep the geese warm (no idea what kind, pictures to come later). When I opened the box the geese were wide awake, alert and ready to be let out. I put them in the make shift brooder with the chickens. 2 of the 12 chicks were in really rough shape, couldn't stand, and movement was spurratic and labored. I removed those two chicks and culled them to end their suffering. They didn't look like they had a chance no matter how much time I invested. Better to put them out of their misery. Anyhoo, so I've got two baby geese and 10 most likely roo's. The Geese are for my mom and the roos will probably end up in my flock and eventually the stew pot. But hey, 10 free chickens, I'll take em. All in all I'm pleased with ideal thus far. I'll let y'all know how things progress.
