That shit is ridiculous. I glaze over like a donut, and skip pages.

I never skip pages (it's not a virtue--it's just obsessiveness), but I personally enjoyed the Birthday Party and Council of Elrond. I do, however, concede that many find them boring--hence permissible to skip. They don't add a lot to the narrative--they're pieces of jewelry. If you appreciate beautiful literature, they'll please you, but not so much if what you enjoy is riveting action.
