Hey, so my biggest hen, a jersey giant, who has been laying for a year or two now, just layed this weird, long giant egg. I think it is because of the fertilizer that our neighbor put in our yard (its happened before)... It's just nitrogen, but do you all know if this is dangerous for the hen to lay/me to eat? Note: all the mutated eggs are double yolkers

Let’s not go all crazy and jump to conclusions... that egg very well may be a glitch. If we don’t see more like it, I wouldn’t assume something is seriously wrong.

Indeed. Glitches happen.

But chickens still shouldn't be allowed to eat lawn chemicals and one person's neighbor ought not to be spreading lawn chemicals in another person's poultry pasture. :)

Agreed. And it recently dawned on me that I can't fertilize my bushes anymore.

If your chickens are hanging out under the bushes then they're doing the fertilizing for you. :D

Alternately, you can make chicken-wire surrounds to use when you want to fertilize, spread the fertilizer right before heavy rain, and take up the surrounds after the fertilizer pellets are no longer visible.

Any chance you can take a picture of the egg and post it here?
No, but this is a lot what it looked like.

That's a perfectly fine egg if your's looks like that one in the pic. It's just the bloom (protective covering on the shell).
It's much longer and larger than her usual ones, and it doesn't actually have the different shades, exept that it has speckles, which my girl's usual one doesn't.

That looks like a normal egg to me. Oftentimes a hen will lay an egg that's abnormal, double/triple/etc yolkers. I believe it's fine but the true test will be whenever you crack it open.
I did. we made french toast. It seems fine. I'm not dead yet, so I'm assuming that nitrogen is ok
