I don't think the frayed tail feathers will tell us much; that could easily happen if she's turning around & around in the nest box. As far as the droopiness and allowing herself to be picked up with no fuss whatsoever...that's not good. I definitley think you have an illness going on. What, I'm not sure. It seems there are SO very many poultry illness that present with lethargy, like this. If she were mine, as a first line of defense, I'd go ahead & give her a treatment of Ivermectin Eprinex. Eprinex is the VERY BEST Ivermectin available - it's expensive, but well worth it. I tried to be cheap & get the regular topical one that was less expensive, and ended up with mites again in short order. The Eprinex will rid her of any unseen parasites, as this could be a contributor.

Again, if she were mine, I would first treat with Eprinex and then move on from there - reason being, one of the most common ailments is parasites, which can cause issues with egg laying.

I was just sent a link to a thread discussing the SAME exact situation. The interesting thing is the 'egg-drop-syndrom' as it is called happens to alpha hens. There seems to be a virus that is passed on to baby chicks through a vaccine. They suggest to induce a molt and that should kick the hen back into laying proper eggs. As for the tail feathers, I spoke to someone who also had the egg thing happen to an Australorb, such as mine, and she said that her hen took 2 months to go through molt and only lost her tail feathers after a period of "fray style". So let's keep our fingers crossed.

I started treating with DE today and I will hand out some crushed Tums to Lorelei, to give her an extra calcium boost.......

If all fails I will treat her with meds. Tums come cheap in my house with coupons

what about if the chicken is laying a yolk no shell no membrain, 2 mins after laying a no shell egg. and drinking lots of water? is their a problem? this is done at night too.

newhenstein - wow - I'm SO glad that you found that other thread! Way to use the Search feature! Yes, it does sound like the issue is the same or at the least, VERY similar.

Hmm...according to this: http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Factsheets/pdfs/egg_drop_syndrome.pdf It doens't sound like it's a curable disease - it's viral. I hope I'm wrong, though!
