Morning Friends.

Busy day for me today.

But question... I know there are a million threads and tons of info out there on processing, but I'd like to know how my friends do it. I've got some birds that need to be processed. I'm not giving them away, might as well eat them. But we've only processed one of our own (and I didn't consider him a "pet"). Plenty of wild game, turkeys, deer, etc, so its mainly the "deed" that I can't decide the best way to handle.

Hi WV - I don't have a kill cone thingy, so i find it less hassle with two people. I sharpen a big knife very well, put their neck over a log and give it the full beans - takes way under a second - pain and suffering kept to an absolute minimum. In fact i gotta do the same tomorrow morning as i have on heck of a noisy girl - neighbours not too keen on the noise my chickens make, so its best she goes before she gets me into even more hot water.

Morning WV.

I don't use a kill cone. Not a big fan of them for some reason. I've used three different methods. All have resulted in a quickly dead bird. I'll either use my hands to break there necks (firm grip around the neck, twist the head around with the other), the broomstick method (put a broomstick on the birds neck, stand on the broom stick and pull up on the birds legs) and last I've just lopped off there head on a log with a hatchet. It's all personal preference. Just like people not naming birds they plan on eating. I've found that the more violent the method, the quicker the death. I mostly use the broomstick as I can then hold onto the bird when the nerves kick in.

Good morning, Pond Scum. I'm safely on my lily pad watching the world go by.

Hope you got yourself a pocketful of those tomatoes to munch on. The chicken and penne was great last night, thanks. Seems food occupied many a thought yesterday - sure made me hungry!

Turk processes her own birds. She's PM me info about it months ago.

Thanks guys! I think I could do the broomstick method with the smaller birds. Not sure I could handle one of the big ones myself that way, but I'll talk to hubby about it. I need to do something with my turkey-sized LO boys, and also several bantams. I dont trust myself to hit hard enough and accurately enough with a hatchet. I have enough trouble with kindling lol.

If you want to you can check youtube for video on the broomstick method. If you don't trust yourself hitting accurately with a hatchet then get a machete.
