Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Back from the show! There were only a couple Call drakes for sale, none of them a color I wanted, and then it was pretty much just random chickens, so nothing I was interested in.

That did not, however, stop me from leaving with some new birds.

I can't get good pictures in the lighting in the garage, but:

These guys are practically green, they have so much beautiful sheen. Black east indies. I figured they'd be no more work than the Calls, so why not?

Also, I'd been thinking about getting back into regular-sized ducks since I decided to stop with the welsh harlequins, and that leads me to these:

A pair of cayugas. Again, the photo does them no justice. I'm going to have to get pictures in the daylight. The father of the drake took best medium class duck at the show today.

I'm now looking forward to black eggs, both large and tiny :)

Too bad the black doesnt last long..... it's kinda cool though....I really want east indies have four a while but had to settle for Cayogas...... then my other ducks would not except then doi after a year I had to give them away. I don't have any where around here to buy ducks..... so I'm stuck with what I can get from the hatchery...... might try a few runners next year.... but if I ever can get Indies I'll jump on it.

Yeah, it would be nice if the black color stayed all laying season, lol. Would you ever consider having a breeder ship you some? I bet you could find a breeder to ship you a pair of the indies. But shipping is always nerve-wracking.

Very nice! I need to educate myself on the differences between Black East Indies & Cayuga's. Got any bullet points???

Cauygas are a medium weight large fowl duck that became popular around Cayuga Lake, New York and so were given their name after the lake. Black east indies are a small bantam breed, about Call-sized, and were also created here in the US despite the name.

Both are black with gorgeous green sheen, both lay black eggs (that fade to gray over the laying season) and they are similar in build, but the east indies are of course much smaller :)
