Speaking of cochins... I got a splash!!!

What I was told about mille vs. calico on cochins was that the hackle feathers should be dark or black to be mille.  Calicos are the lighter ones.  :idunno

Calico wasn't a 'real' color (maybe people are trying to actually breed it now so that could have changed?) but it was what people were calling their birds from the mille project that had too much white. The end goal of the mille fleur project is to have birds that have the same pattern as a mille fleur d'uccle, so just having black hackles wouldn't have made it a mille, they would need to have the proper feather spangling, the black chevrons in the right places on the feathers, etc. Maybe things have changed, but back when I was working on it a couple years ago calico was what people were calling their mismarked birds from the mille fleur project that had too much white, incorrect markings, etc. Seems like the color may have taken on a life of its own.

Hi everyone!
:frow Hi, Kathy!!
I did give the chicks my normal 4 times the recommended dosage of Agri Labs vitamin electrolytes Plus. The first time I ever did that was by accident and it actually saved three chicks that I know we're destined to die over the first week. I swear by that stuff
Good stuff... I only go for the Rooster Booster brand cuz it's cheaper by volume amount when bought from the store... it's opposite if bought online though, lol...
My spangled OEGB eggs just came in! Hopefully this batch I will get some to hatch :fl
:ya :fl :fl
because we all have way too many chickens
And ducks... and... and...

I'd say I agree... it became a fad, just like the silkied feathers in other breeds now... I see so many that try to say they must have Silkie in their background, it drives me crazy... it's just a recessive feather gene that was considered a defect and culled for in the past... now people like it so they breed FOR it now...

yes this weekend! :weee Need to figure out where we're meeting you. Heading home now to go check on the snowy baby. it doesn't look very Lively there but it was very vocal this morning which was not as vocal yesterday so I'm hopeful this will be the first successful hatch I've had in a while on the call ducks.

I love the bonkers. They are hilarious. They make my Ancona look like midgets though

Oh, we are planning Saturday
