Haven't seen a trick or treater here for 43 years; 600' of gravel lane is farther than they want to go, 'specially when it's uphill going back.

I've had 1 trick-or-treater here in the last 5 years; same deal as you, nobody wants to go all the way down the road. Used to get 'em in droves when I lived in the city.

Where you are right.... There were sickos when I grew up too.... Some of the problem these days are the way we coddle our kids.
Like i say some of the problem.... We don't want to expose our kids to danger.... But at the same time these days we can't even allow them to scrape their knees..... We will raise kids that can't function in the real world.

Wonder how many of them have ever played dodge ball or kickball, or played on a jungle gym.

The thing I like about ham and beans is - when I can remember - to put it on early in the morning - really slow simmer - lots of chilli powder, cumin, bay...and then the whole house smells yummy. Not in the summer. Definitely not a summer dish.

That settles it. I'm learning to make ham & beans this fall.

I just thought of something funny.... The one thing my mom did do was but me a carton of cigarettes every week.... Pretty sure that would be child abuse these days....I just saw an article yesterday that a Dr was saying soon playing football should be considered child abuse.

Can you imagine!? How did we survive our childhoods? No seat belt laws, no car seats, no helmets when we rode our bikes. Heck, we rode down the highway in the back of our cousins pick-up truck and had a blast!

I wonder how good there eye sight is.

Some people with wood stoves just leave the pot on the stove..... Eat as you want to... It's a great winter food for sure.

That's what I do. Beans, soup, stews...They love coming in out of the cold to the warm and the good smells of food! lol

Beans aren't difficult, I do the long,keep an eye on em way cause I'm here all day. Do em like K, soak em(overnight if it's easier time wise) rinse em, throw em in a crock pot, add your hocks cook four or five hours salt n pepper to taste! You got this!
