Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Lost track of what day she is on. Some hens 'lock down' prior to hatching, and some continue leaving the nest to defecate, eat, etc. Keep an eye on things and remove her from the nest daily if she still has days to go. I'd be concerned of intruders inadvertently breaking pipped or zipped eggs prematurely and then eating the chicks. Good luck.

Thanks Sour. I'll reattach the chicken wire on the door in the morning.

Wasn't sure if she still needed to get out once a day or not.

(Guess I shouldn't disturb her either. This broody thing sucks - not like I'm a control freak or anything.)

I really don't like feathered incubators

They want to peck me and that makes me angry and that makes me lose control. And I am a control freak .

Didn't do so good at the flea market today either

Only sold seven . Four young pullets and three cocks . Only got 9 apiece for the pullets and 15 apiece for the cocks .Just glad I didn't take a bunch only took 15 . Thought I jump on and say I might miss you people a little bit .I'm really not into television and this is what I do when DW watches her shows. I joined the herd but didn't read much yet. If the new format is like that It won't be so bad we can deal with it . Gonna take a while to adjust though . Flocks and herds can mingle if it's a flock of sheep and a herd of goats or cows .

I've got a job going on for the next few days . That will keep my little narrow mind tied up so I'll get by .

Howdy K. I love my broodies, I have nice ones.... They do all the work for me. No temp spikes and consistently high hatch rates.

Thanks Sour. I'm actually not exactly sure what day she is on. When I found the eggs on April 22 they looked to be about day 4 on candling. So if she started setting around the 18th, they would be on day 19 or 20 now.

Just went out and closed the chicken wire, and will set up food and water in the morning. I agree, that's probably how one of the eggs got cracked, and it was the only Legbar egg. :(

Nice to see you K! Miss you too.

Ok, I brought Joan's eggs in to check on them. One had a hairline crack in the small end with some dried blood, so may have quit. Didn't see movement but veins still looked good. Rubbed some antibiotic ointment into the crack just in case. One I can't tell, no draw down yet but too dark to see well. Two had internal pips and one was peeping its head off.

Should I close off the brooder box to keep the other hens out? Only one Orloff likes to still lay in there, I've been removing her eggs daily. Guess I should dust off my chick feeders and waterers just in case.

Still having a field mice problem. Have traps set up in a shoebox. Weird having a broody and not being able to see what's going on. Hope Joan is not a baby killer like Betty was!

Good luck to Joan!

I've got another pair of broodies. :th SDW OEGBs, finally gave them 8 eggs today from my new splash bantam cochins. :D

Sorry about the bad luck at the flea market. I have yet to even make it to one this year. :(

I assume you found the pond on the other site? Going to be a busy week for me anyway, so I'm not sure how much I'll be there. But hubby will be gone a couple nights this week, so I'll need something to occupy my time.

WV, did I tell you another baby hatched? Jace now has a 100% hatch rate from refrigerated eggs. Wonder what her secret is?

They can be pretty awesome. My white serama Prissy is the only one of mine this year that was bitchy. My 3 chocolate orps have been great. Raising 3 sets of babies in the same pen with another hen and the rooster. They have been amazing sharing duties. Mocha actually started laying again yesterday!
