Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Okay, short Marek's analogy for ya'll. (I recently read an article about how Marek's in chickens is helping unlock some of the issues with chickenpox, so here you go.)
Chickenpox is a herpes virus found in every human population. It is most contagious the day or two before a breakout, and in breakout form; although it can be transferred by any contact with bodily fluids.
Here's the tricky part. Not all people who are exposed will have a significant breakout, (although, thankfully with chickenpox, it has external, visible symptoms, so even a tiny breakout is noticeable) and some will have such a significant breakout that they suffer debilitating results. The ending result in either case is that regardless of the severity of the breakout, almost every human being - at some point in their lives- is a carrier for the virus.
Now, the even trickier part.
Person A never contracted the pox as a child, in fact, they were exposed multiple times throughout young adulthood as well, with no adverse effects. Resistant? Quite possibility. At age 39, however, immunity luck runs out and such a severe case ensues that hospitalization is required.
Person B - same scenario - develops shingles at age 64. Not resistant either.
Person C - same scenario. Dies at the ripe old age of 98, never having the dreaded disease. Resistant? A post mortem genetics test is possible - which may reveal some interesting scientific data. But true resistance can only be determined once the subject dies without having contracted the virus. eta: or without having had a breakout...the virus will probably still be found in their system.

And btw, here's the article to which I referred. The caption under the picture made me do a double-take.

Interesting... I have had chickenpox, but oddly enough I have never had a cold sore in my life... another symptom of a common herpes virus...

Apparently, neither can old bald guys.

There's a story behind that. Apparently I made the cut, but the competition was steep. :lau

No worries... the flashy ones are always Poison Dart Frogs...

Yeah, viruses are so interesting. The greater scientific community still has no answer for why they can absolutely devastate one population, and lie dormant in another. And sadly, the asymptomatic, dormant population can be carriers - infecting more susceptible populations (think early Native Americans and Europeans).

I thought the herpes virus that includes cold sores was hereditary

I get ‘em but not had one for years (cold sores, neither :D) - i put it down to Mr G reducing my brain cells to such a low level that being stressed would be a luxury :lau

I don't remember... just remember that it is said to be so common that most of the population has it... even odder, my older sisters got cold sores all the time...

Chicken flock speaking, we know CLs are very susceptible. GFF lost their entire first import to MDV. Either coincidentally or not, that's the primary breed I lost. Although I have 3 left - but one managed to pick at and eat some of the paint off her house yesterday...
Are they more resistant? Maybe. Could they drop dead tomorrow? Possibly. Will they die of paint poisoning? Unlikely, it is latex.

No, it's viral. Probably thought to be hereditary because it's hard to control body fluid contact in family environments.

You must just see me coming.... Always going to bed when I show up....
Just bad timing my friend.:hugs
Loved the northern lights pics!!!:love
Good morning, Pond Flockers. I'm waxing my lily pad this morning - then going to buff it with my butt. Trying to attract some company to the empty pad next to me.

Good morning flocks...(following the theme):lau
Lost my quotes and I can't remember nothing...:th

I was told by my pediatrician when my daughter was a baby that the cold sore/ herpes virus is the exact same thing and that it can actually transfer to any nerve in your body once you have it. So I don't remember ever having a cold sore in my life. . but somehow my daughter got it when she was just a 3 or 4 month old baby. Because she was a baby it came out in her throat. . blisters in the throat and on the tongue of a baby still on a bottle can you imagine? It was HORRIBLE!
It did in fact transfer to another place on her body and we wound up in the er. One night being told they were going to report me to family services! By the grace of God they said they would wait until they confirmed with my pediatrician what I was telling them. They finally believed me after talking to her Dr. And let us go.

I think she got it in the nursery at the hospital.
She would also get extremely high fevers with it. This happened on and off for a few years. When she was old enough to take the chicken pox vaccine I reluctantly give it to her not knowing if it would help or hurt her. . she never broke out again after that. But the whole thing was a total nightmare!
