My coop is open all day in temps around zero and my birds are fine....I feel for them but they are okay. I'm sure they can't wait for the temps to go back up. But my point is since not lost one bird yet in 4 years during the winter no matter how cold.
When the temps stay below ZERO I just keep them inside the coop that day. With PLENTY ventilation.
Even my Ayams are fine. But I feel without ventilation her birds will get sick....

I would still think with proper ventilation it wouldn't have built up enough to kill the flock. . .but could be that the birds were hanging out around it for the warmth.

but then what about the commercially produced ones, like the ones from Brinsea? How do they heat the flat surface if not with wires? ?????

I bought mine as a "new customer return". Somehow the plate came loose from the housing, I couldn't return it, so i glued it back together. I took a picture of the inside while i had it open. The heating coil is under the mylar.

I'm not trying to be a butt.... If people are worried about using heating pads don't do it.... I'm just starting that what I know about tephlon is that it's very stable and isn't supposed to be toxic at temps under 500 degrees.
Also if I had a heating pad that wasn't in good shape it would more likely be a fire or shock danger and would have been thrown away long ago.

My main worry is the birds picking at the wires. No diss to anyone who uses them, I'm just not a fan. We always appreciate your technical expertise though Phil.

Yup.... very difficult to achieve unless you burn the pan... or cook it in the oven.

The heating elements wont have wire in them... the connection to the heatin elements to deliver the electricity will. Say on Brinsea

brinsea will have HEat Tape which is littlerally a printed circuit board on Mylar... They use those printed heat tapes for reptile enclosure heat. To deliver eighty degrees it takes very very little energy... producing nothing near 500 degrees.

I was on the MHP site for a very long time. LOve the principal... but will be building my own out of materials that I know are: Safe, Fire Resistant, and Waterproof.

I didn't even know they used Teflon on bulbs


This I knew since I've had parakeets and cockatiels. I also knew that some hair dryers were toxic because of the Teflon thing... But I didn't know it affected poultry the same way. So should we be checking our hair dryers before we use them on our birds?

Maybe we need to have a double B itch party Teflon is everywhere in everything .used exstensively as plumbing gaskets hydraulic seals and MUCH MUCH MORE. When it comes to non stick cookware Teflon is a minor component . Hair dryers not likely used much if any in or around the heating element .

We got rid of the teflon pots. Hairdryers too? How would you know?

Here is the Dupont data sheet or MSDS sheet for Teflon.... its a requirement for all companies to comply with a Data sheet that shows the toxisity and regulatory standards. For manufacturing processes... Some of the warnings would not apply... except for people who are using teflon in a manufacturing environment.

The gist of it says The outgassing point of Teflon is 500 degrees. Other reading I did on the subject says that the new Diamond coatings offered have Teflon in them.

Be aware... While the new standards and manufacturing processes may be changed to exclude teflon... Anything on the shelf over a few years old may still have teflon in it. and since there is no real expiration date on possible components with Teflon in them. I would suggest making sure any heating elements have good ventilation.

Episodes of animals harmed by the old pans were traced back to a pan left on the stove or oven and getting so hot it began to burn off the teflon. 500 degrees can be achieved by an oven... and maybe a gas stove top.

Heat lamp possibly. I for one would prefer to use Ceramic heating elements any way... IF I were going to heat a coop. or any part of a coop. Though I like my dads description of my Grandpas heater... its intriguing.

Deb the melting point of pure Teflon is 100C making it unfit in it's pure state for high temperature applications. like you said it has to be a compound with Teflon as a component . The only place I've ever encountered Teflon in small electric appliances is very small eclectic motors and only as thrust washers .And very few of those . Like model car or slot cars or toys . But many household faucets have Teflon seals . They are safe. Most water heaters are set around 110 degrees . The heating elements in hair dryers have no Teflon in them and are safe to use with out worry . Any Teflon would be used as insulators . I'm in shock that they would use something with a such a low melting point as a component in a shatterproof coating for light bulbs A 250 watt heat lamp will very easily heat Teflon to it's gas point .And will heat almost all poly compounds to their melting point. For sure the bumper cover on DW's mini van I was under the impression that the EPA mandated Teflon could no longer be used in nonstick cookware . Am I wrong ?But my memory is like my sex life almost gone
