They are only 7 weeks old, so it may be a little time yet until I see their true adult color. I have them tucked in out of the wind right now, they poked their heads out earlier, but just went into a flower bed to hunker down. i was worried they would blow away!!

I definitely didnt read all of the other post on this thread, so this might have already been covered.

But I am new to ducks (Guineas and Chickens for awhile) and dont know much about them, But my welch ducks seem a little slower than the other ducks I have. Ive seen them fly into things and crash land a couple of times. Is this regular behavior or am I just too worried about them.

I would appreciate any info you could give me.

WH are not flyers. I had been told they couldn't get off the ground at all before I got mine, but the truth is they can. They are
not graceful by any means but they can get about 3 ft up and sustain a flight/glide for about 20 yards. At least based on my group.
Crosses can trick you. I have a WH/Cayuga mix that I had to clip because he was flying way to well. Evidently, first time crosses tend to revert to the original genes of Mallards, excellent flyers. Fortunately, my other WH/Cayuga drake either didn't revert, or is
to busy being king Drake to bother with more than a get off the ground and go 10 ft.

Best,

Liz

My WH don't ever try to fly. Its all about the digging and swimming. They are smarter than most people give them credit. Mine free range all day and are waiting by the coop at bed time.If they aren't there, I call them and here they come waddling around the corner....good ducks.

Hi Grateful Geese,

Don't mention the digging, the only one of mine that's worse about that is my Blue Runner hen. She is the worst. The slightest bit of dampness on the ground and she is bill down and shoveling.
She's great in the egg department though, so I can't get to angry at her when I have to fill holes and reseed yard. She is the first to dig and then all the WH girls start right in after.

But how can you not love them. I have my youngest WH hen inside right now with a limpy right leg. I'm afraid she was just far enough behind the other hens that she went on the layers feed to early. Too much calcium is a bad thing, to young. It's funny though, I thought she would be all upset about being inside. I think she
remembers being in our kitchen when she was a hatchling, so all the sounds and voices are familiar still. She just settled right into her tub and is quiet and peaceful.
She is just as sweet as you please.

Best to all.

Liz
