Welsummer Chicks sexing

Now you have me changing my mind.
First one may be a cockerel.
Because they don't look to be Welsummers.

I'm not convinced that they are both pullets. I see one male and one female.
The one with the large comb is a male.

I'm sorry, I doubt either are a Welsummer.

You definitely have one male (the one with the large comb and wattles), and one female.

Since they have a lot of red on them, I think you may have Production Reds, which can be chipmunked as chicks. Adult feather development will give further indication...if more red takes over on the whole body.

The one photo looks like Brown Leghorn, and they may both be Brown Leghorn, though a bit redder for that. It can be very, very hard to tell a BL from a Wellie as chicks.

Male and female BL have the same chest coloring....until the male feathers come in.

If they even out with more red on their whole body, they are Production Red.

If they remain with the red/gold/brown chest and patridge back, they are Brown Leghorn. A white earlobe will develop as well.

If they are Welsummer (which your female *might* be), the female will have a salmon chest with partridge back and red earlobe.

My best guess right now with those photos is.....one female possibly Welsummer. One male possibly Brown Leghorn....both may be Production Red.

But definitely one male and one female.

Interesting! Both were in the same container marked Welsummer. I don't recall now if they were mixed in with anything else...hmmm. definitely a wait and see there. But I definitely have one pullet and one c ockerel.

Thanks for the info.

Agree with some of this.
Ya when it said welsummer and they were old enough to have some breast feathers it was like no brainer. Reddish is female. Black is male. They both showed red breast so both pullets.
In your second pics I thought man that looks like a cockerel but couldn't be. Then I saw how much red they had I thought those aren't welsummer.
Look to be feathering in as production reds but myself I've never seen production reds so brown chipmunk striped. Usually even when striped they are red toned striped.
As far as brown leghorns I don't agree that both sexes breast feather in same when young. Just like welsummers at about 3 weeks females get reddish breast and males get black. Both sexes can have some specks of color in the breast when first feather in. Males never have reddish breast and surely never have breasts with as much red as your chicks.
It is my opinion neither are welsummer and neither are light or dark brown leghorn.

Well I'm definitely bummed...I wanted Welsummers. Thank you for this info. Guess I'll have to read up on Production Reds.

Yes...I think you are right...now that I think back (been a few years since I've had Brown Leghorn...I've had mostly Welsummer)....yes, the males do show more black in the chest early on.

Which leads me back to too much red in those chicks.

I too usually see Production Red with more red tone from chick down, but these are so red and not following regular patterns.

Hatcheries are notorious for not being to standard, though you won't see red chests on males if they are true Welsummer or Brown Leghorn.

You might luck out and have a Wellie girl...Production Red is the best I can come up with for the male.

As chicks, those chick downs are very, very similar, and feed stores switch orders on pack out all the time.
