Went to TSC *about the 6 chick minimum

Our TSC has a 6 chick minimum. I don't mind it. I do think it prevents impulse buys. Also, I asked why I had to give my name and address, and they said they had to keep track in case of Avian Influenza or something. I don't really think it's a big deal.

Calif. A 6 chick min? Not so much. And the name and addy thingy...next thing you know they will be wanting to "chip" our birds.

Nope, me either. The TSC's I was in also knew it wasn't a state law. They said it was a TSC thing, but they would sell less then six if you asked. I only bought 4 bantams, and they had no problem with that. She said she would rather see some go home and get cared for properly, then have them sit in the store overnight unattended.

NH - it seems to depend on where you go. AGWAY claims a 12 bird minimum even on ducks. Other places 3 & 6. As long as they know that you are knowledgeable in the keeping of fowl, then they combine orders.

The NH state law is a minimum of 12 chicks. The reason behind this is potential public health consequences. Since chicks can carry Salmonella and have been implicated in transmitting it to small children, they want to keep people from just buying a couple of chicks for kids' pets.

FWIW, the folks at Agway told me that since I already have chickens, they would sell me just 6. (Thanks, but I'm hatching my own this week. And I couldn't walk away from the swap without any new ones, could I ; ) )

Here is NY's law....

§ 354. Sale of baby chicks and baby rabbits. 1. No person shall sell,
offer for sale, barter or give away living baby chicks, ducklings or
other fowl or baby rabbits unless such person provides proper brooder
facilities where appropriate for the care of such baby chicks, ducklings
or other fowl or baby rabbits during the time they are in the possession
of such person. For the purposes of this section, a baby rabbit shall be
a rabbit of less than two months of age.
2. No person shall sell, offer for sale, barter or display living baby
chicks, ducklings or other fowl or baby rabbits which have been dyed,
colored or otherwise treated so as to impart to them an artificial
color.
2-a. No provision of subdivision two shall be interpreted or applied
to prevent or restrict teachers and qualified instructors of youth under
the guidance and supervision of the New York state cooperative extension
service from using eggs for non-profit educational purposes or from
observing fowl hatched from such eggs for non-profit educational
purposes.
3. No person shall sell, offer for sale, barter or give away living
baby chicks, ducklings or other fowl or baby rabbits under two months of
age in any quantity less than six.
4. A violation of the provisions of this section is a misdemeanor,
punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year, or by a fine of
not more than five hundred dollars, or by both.

when reading the laws or rules written by the NH Agrraculture , it is 12 chick minimum.
it depends on the store whether you have to abide or not.
