Went to TSC *about the 6 chick minimum

Our TSC's locally have the 6 chick minimum, and I was told it was to discourage the novelty easter chicks etc and to hopefully deter buyers who want just one to feed to a snake.

Discouraging them from buying chicks for snake food is not what happened last week in our TSC. A couple was in there bragging how they were buying them for their snake. Said it was pretty cheap food for their snake and will toss out the ones she doesn't eat if it gets too big for her.

our TSC has an abundance of chicks too and last year they went like crazy. I was also told it was a state law and informed them it was not. I would go in and get 3 to give my broody with the 4 just hatched but I wont buy 6.

NH - it seems to depend on where you go. AGWAY claims a 12 bird minimum even on ducks. Other places 3 & 6. As long as they know that you are knowledgeable in the keeping of fowl, then they combine orders.

12 minimum is a law on bunnies chicks ducklings and goslings under 4 weeks of age .

I don't always agree with the law but I do believe in obeying it. As an NPIP tester for Va part of my certificate says no sale of less than 6 chicks and no sale of mammals under 7 weeks without their accompany dam. If I see TSC or any other store ignoring the 6 chick law here I am obligated to report it. I hope everyone else will do the same.

i figured the 6 chick thing, to keep 'heat' in the box on the way home so the babys dont die as much

Better six chicks than three, what if some chicks die before they start laying? you can always sell pullets!

You don't dial 911 and it is not under the local sheriif jurisdiction. But I am sure you know this.
