Went to walmart for milk and.....

Had to drop DS9 off for a boy scout thing. I went to walmart only for a gallon of milk. Usually I do all the shopping I can at Aldi's. A gallon of Great Value milk was 4.13!!! its about 3.29 at Aldi's. I bought stroked out. I then moseyed by the eggs as I sell mine for $2.00 a dz. The great value ones were 1.88 dz . So my price will definitly be going up.

Haven't really bought a big load of groceries in a while though we are due. WOW the dairy department at wally world just seems crazy high to me. Drove home kinda sad.

Have you noticed dairy gong up a lot in the last month?

Ouch!!! I'm seeing an increase in dairy here in Chicago, too, and we're close to Wisconsin which is a major dairy state. DH is the only one who drinks real milk and I find it between $3.28 and 3.89 for a gallon. The kid and I have drank soymilk for years and price is still okay. Cheese is getting absolutely outrageous in price and that's something we all eat. I'm now buying 2.5lb blocks of it at Costco for a little under $5 instead of paying almost $4.00 for an 8oz block at the regular grocery store. The independent cheese store still has okay prices on a wide variety of domestic and imports but it's not close by.

When we lived in Louisiana, we used to pay roughly $4.15 for a gallon of Great Value milk at Walmart (that was in 2006).

We moved to California, and that same year, it was 2 gallons for $3.78.

I guess it all depends on how close you are to the dairy.

In 2012, at the major grocery chains we pay approximately $4.50 for 2 gallons of milk. According to family members still stuck down south in Louisiana, they are still paying roughly $4 to $5 PER GALLON for milk.

I think it just depends on where you live.

Our family members down south are paying double for milk as compared to what we are paying in California... where the happy cows live....

Yep DD 13 just finished off the cheese to make some tortilla pizza's for herself. SO cheese as well as butter are on my list for wed. Dairy is something that I just don;t see myself cutting back on.

I live in Wisconsin and yes the dairy has gone up. I drink soy milk since I hate cow milk. Cheese has been very expensive here for the name brands like Sargento's but some of smaller dairy cheeses are still reasonable. Oddly the least expensive shredded cheese I get comes from Illinois!
Anyway, there is a reason why milk and dairy have gone up. The commodities have gone up. Specifically corn. Corn has been over $6.00 a bushel and almost as high as $8.00 at times at market. A week or so ago, it finally fell to a more normal rate. However, it has since climbed again.

Corn is big part for feed for cows, so anything cow related be it dairy or meat has gone up. The corm commodities prices also drive up the other feed commodities like the price of soy and wheat. Hence feed costs more to make. In the last 5 years some of the feed prices have doubled.
Not to mention what ethanol production does to the corn market as well.
I can only hope that the dairy prices will fall again once corn comes down in price by the bushel, but I'm not holding my breath. Markets know that once consumers get used to the high prices, they rarely notice when the price on the product does not go down when it should and they can make more profit.

Across the river in Madison Indiana there is a discount grocery owned by Kroger called Ruler. We buy a gallon of Kroger branded milk for $1.49. Same price at the Kroger and Aldi stores. I agree that the ethanol fuel scam is driving food prices up and hurting almost everyone.

Bless you all... I gripe at $2.50 a gallon. How do you all do it? I have 2 kids and a husband that drink the stuff...

I pay $5 or $6/gal for organic milk. I'd rather get raw, but it's hard to find. We just put a deposit down on a few goats last week and one is due to kid at the end of Feb. I won't be buying milk from the store for very much longer!
