For the first time ever here, both I and my DH heard at separate times last night what we believe were coyotes. I know they are here because I've seen them, both dead and alive, a ways from the house on the side of the road a couple of times. I know we have foxes-one female even denned up on our property once since we had free ranging chickens (she never took any of ours, thankfully).

We have high fences, but coyotes don't let 6 ft fences deter them. Only the welded wire-covered bantam pen would really be truly safe from them so now, we're on edge. A week ago, we heard a Great Horned Owl as well for the first time. Seems the predator population is coming in closer now.

I have heard owls recently, here, too.
The predators are closing in, it seems.

Now time to get rid of the coyote. They will kill your cat and a small dog easily. If they are hungry, they will try even a bigger dog.

.22 long is plenty powerful to kill a coyote. And if you plan to use a trap, don't use a snare trap. Last thing you want to find is your cat or dog in it.

Another suggestion is to get a LGD. Great Pyrenees, Anatolian, or Maremma Sheepdogs. They are not house pets. They are working dogs and need to live with herd or flock.

Stay alert for the coyote. He will be back.

I have alerted the owner of the property, who lives up the hill (where the coyote came from, right before being here), and they are getting a friend to come and dispatch with the coyote (and friends). We all have cats and chickens and he cannot be allowed to run amok. I am very vigilant, and have our own weapon at the ready. My husband is going out of town, tonight, so it is me and the Big Dog and the gun vs. The Coyote, should he attack at night.
My dog has been camped out in my bedroom window, from inside, this afternoon, listening to the sound of the chickens. She has called our attention to the area twice today, and we were at the ready. She is a young dog but is large and somewhat formidable about protection. I chose not to involve her during my own altercation with the coyote, because I didn't want to put her at risk. Worrying about the chickens was all I could manage.
I am not even considering trapping at this point. I don't want to catch him.

GOOD LUCK and I am so glad your girl came back that is awesome!!! I hope you get it!!! Dang predators!! I haven't been able to let my girls out to free range without supervision for the last 2 months. They HATE it!! They only get out for about an hour a day when someone can be with them. Tonight my kids were out with them when I was making dinner and my 8 yr old daughter came running in yelling a Coopers hawk just swooped down and tried to get the chickens....when I asked if everyone was ok and did they put the girls up she said yes and we threw walnuts at it to make it go away! At least the girls were smart enough to run to the coop and take cover...not sure if from the hawk or my crazy kids throwing walnuts!! At least no one was injured! I guess the walnuts are good for something other than messing up my yard!
