from WI. Check the breed charts, one of my favorites is Hendersons Chicken Breed chart. RIR's are very good layers and hardy, so are NHR..... a lot of the dual purpose chickensthat have smaller combs and wattles are good with cold weather. Most breeds do better with cold than heat. Some heavy breeds tolerate heat poorly. Other than fences, a sturdy coop look into electric wire/fence to protect your chickens from predators. And consider covering the run with roof/netting/wire to protect from hawks, eagles and owls....I am sure folks from your area can give you some good advice
