What animal is this

in that case I think you are dealing with a coon, I do not believe your dog did that usually they dont go through the trouble, especially if you never saw it trying to get in the cage again. A racoon is very strong and can open and manipulate just about anything a child can. its those darn tumbs. I am sure if you set a trap thats what you will find.

good luck, again so sorry. I also apologize for not understanding that you were not free ranging him.

I had this happen to my ducks a few years ago. 2 were beheaded and dead in the yard and another one was gone. I was told a fox will kill as many as they can by beheading them, then come back for them and take them to another location. I was able to track the one that was missing into a culvert where there were foxes spotted. We also had raccoons in the area. A dog would have made a mess. This was a true predator.

I kind of confused things because I opened a new thread because I was going to post a picture of the roosterin the new thread because my husband and groundskeeper lied to me about what happened to my rooster. I was going to have my husband post the picture in the new thread because I cant look at dead animals it really freaks me out. They did not tell me that he was beheaded, my ten year old daughter did.
But my husband and grounds keeper told me different.
It was only after my husband told me that he did not believe that it was a coon that it was our dog that I demanded that he take a picture of my rooster for the forum to decide what killed it that he told me that it was really beheaded
I am so mad. When I catch this thing I swear with every breath that I breath it will suffer and suffer hard

I understand you are upset, but do yourself a favor and just kill the predator humanely. Making something suffer will only haunt you later on as you calm down and realize it was only doing what it was designed to do.

We often romanticize ideas of revenge, but in reality it is a nasty unneccesary business. Revenge on an animal, is silly, by taking revenge on an animal by causing it to suffer means you have attached human attributes to the predator. Making yourself believe that what the animal did was to spite you, when in reality it was probably just an opportunistic coon unable to pass up the "opportunity" at easy prey.

Sorry you lost a favorite bird, it often seems that our more favorite animals are taken first. Good luck hunting and remember to be reasonable and humane. An animal causes suffering because they know no better; a human causing suffering is all the more worse, because we acknowledge we are doing it. Death and suffering are two completely different things, don't confuse them.
