What are the odds?

I used to ride this horse named Tiki there. She was a crazy paint horse who threw and kicked everyone who tried to handle her. This was thanks to a psycho who owned her before the ranch ended up with her, but that's neither here nor there.

Of course, I volunteered to work with the horse. It didnt take long for her to be my friend either and she would do anything and go anywhere I asked. She was actually the horse who saved big mouth Bobby in my other story.

We were out on a different ride with a group of people, when one of the ladies on our ride starting getting heat sickness. We were about 30 min into the 2hr ride, and had about 11 or 12 ppl that time. I told G, the other wrangler I would take her back to the ranch to meet the ambulance.

I got her back safely, and was stressed about leaving G alone with that many people. It is really hard to control a group of people on horseback that have no clue what their doing by yourself. All of our horses were really good, but if you've been around horses, you know how they can get sometimes. So, I started back up the "return" part of the trail, to meet up with G and the group. I ended up running into the other wrangler and her group that left before we did, and her horse wouldn't go past mine while I was mounted.

So, I get off, walk Tiki up to the top of the hill so we are clearly visible to the other horses, and they continue on their way. I go to remount Tiki, and shes throwing her head and dancing cuz she wants to follow the other group and I said no. Well, she throws her head one more time just as I'm swinging over her and all of a sudden I hear a LOUD crack, my vision goes black, and I can feel consciousness trying to slip away I slowly lowered myself into the saddle and fought it off. As my vision came back, I could see blood POURING all over the saddle, the horse and myself. She had busted my nose bad! I took of my long sleeve and used it to try and stop the bleeding.

Funny though, the horse felt super bad. As soon as she connected with my face, she dropped her head and stood statue still until I regained my wits. She never once did anything like that again either. The looks on everyone's face when I got back to the group was priceless. I can only imagine what they were thinking.... Were out in the middle of nowhere, and I lead one of the group away and come back an hour later covered in blood...:gig:gig:gig

Edited cuz I'm still working on that 2nd cup of coffee... I lost it somewhere
People don't seem to understand how even well trained animals can still be unpredictable. And with horses, there's a lot that can startle them, so if you're new to riding, you have to be ready at all times.

My favorites were the people who came out and would tell me what they should/shouldn't be doing/wearing whatever, cuz 20 years ago they used to take lessons on a worn out old horse that took kids in circles in an arena at the slowest pace possible.

Even still, arena riding is WAY different than being out on a trail, especially one with steep rocky cliffs and loose gravel. Not to mention the snakes....

I ended up working at that ranch in a funny way. I'm a mechanic by trade, and was working at a little mom and pop auto repair shop and tire store. One of my favorite customers kept his horse up at the ranch. This guy was awesome. He'd always stop by just to bring me lunch or a drink or whatever.

Well I ended up leaving that shop, and was working at a carwash, which I hated. About 3 weeks into that job, my customer called me up saying they really needed an extra hand at the ranch he boards at, and asked if I would come with him the next day to meet the owner and check the place out.

Needless to say I didnt show up at the carwash the next day, and ended up working at that ranch for 2 years till I moved to NC. I never even went back for my last check.

I'd add a note in the beginning that this thread may cause spontaneous, uncontrollable snorting, giggling, and laughing that may result in injury or damage to personal property, resulting from, but not limited to, spitting drinks on monitors, phones, or other electronics, and possible loss of consciousness due to an inability to breathe from laughing, BUT, I cant cuz Alo disappeared with his birds and never came back.

So I just hijacked the thread to keep it alive in hopes ONE DAY, Alo will be back with photos of his chickens.
So now, we not only have an invisible dog, but we have an invisible Alo ...

Yep, I do. I love, love love horses, even the smell of a barn makes me smile. I always wanted one, just couldn't afford the upkeep. Closest I got was sponsoring one for a couple of months at a riding stable, for one day a week. Where ever I go on vacation, I'll look for a trail ride to do. I still consider myself a beginner rider, though.

Well if you ever get down to Arizona, the ranch I worked at is about an hr south of phoenix in Gold Canyon. The name of the ranch is Don Donnely Riding Stables, or you can find them by looking up D-Spur Ranch. I recommend going in april/early may. We get a lot of rain then, so everything is very green and in bloom. After may it's too durn hot to enjoy it really. Unless you go first thing in the morning.
