Reasons why I have chickens? Easy!

1. I love animals and they are so fun to watch with their personalities.
2. I'm a feather nut and it's fun to hunt loose feathers from them.
3. It's so exciting to get an egg from a bird you have fed and cared for! And they are dee-licious (the eggs, of course)

1. they lay the best eggs that you can ever get, farm fresh eggs are healthier and better-tasting.

2.They do pest control, they will devour almost any bug.

3.They are entertaing, and fun to have around. :)

I am just studying " The Chicken Life". My youngest brother and his wife are moving back to NE Indiana and are going to live on a 6 acre place. She has long wanted to begin to raise chickens as she was use to doing as young girl. I have caught the dream, but I live in town, where I think technically we are not allow to have " livestock". Anyway I will live about 23 miles from them, but am retired. For me raising chickens will be for eggs and meat, but it represents a pathway for me to open up my life to a way of learning a new passion of life. When I read so many stories here, it really encourages me. The only thing is that without my brother and his wife I don't see a way for me to move-if they don't move forward for some reason. Today I visited a feed and gain place just outside of town and I was delighted to se some new chicks under a heat light and several cardboard transfer boxes filled with mostly cornish chicks. I was able to talk to one man who was picking up one box and he shred a bit of his first try at this. So as I said, I am in the balance of if this will come to be and etc

What can I say that hasn't been said? For me, the reasons for getting them were:

1) first step towards self-sustainable living and eradicating toxic garbage from my diet.
2) eggs
3) healthy chicken dinners

Unfortunately, I discovered chicken tv and chicken math, oh no! I was supposed to ever only have 6 but at one point I had 21! So, now it's:

1) eggs
2) fun, adventure, pets (the smart ones), chicken tv, breeding surprise babies (as soon as any of the girls get the desire to brood)
3) healthy, yummy chicken dinners and medicinal soup stock (I know, you didn't want to hear that)

I haven't noticed a reduction in bugs here but I do know the frog population is down by one. Yup, that was an episode of chicken tv that I SO wished I'd caught on camera! :lau
