what are y'all saving from the wild to deal with coming crisis?

A college education also broadens your “world view.” Translated : college educated people are more likely to be less narrow minded.

If only that were true. Some of the most closed-minded people I've met, and now see all of the time on twitter, were/are college educated. The difference between them and, let's say a redneck, was that they thought they were open-minded and the redneck didn't care if he was or not.

I’m not too concerned about feeding my chickens over the winter. The farm store I shop at has a big pre-winter sale to encourage local farmers to stock up. Last year I picked up enough feed and pine shavings to last through the toughest part of winter. The area I currently live in was paralyzed by a winter storm about 10 years ago so being prepared for long term crises is just normal every day.

We discovered that we need to buy a years worth of the hay we need at a time or we get to where we are right now—racing to the feed store when they call and say they have Timothy.

The store I go to is really perceptive and anticipate the needs of the local farmers including us backyard farmers and poultry keepers. They are all farmers themselves and understand. I feel fortunate.

Our thing is that we’re competing with everyone else who has run short this year. Part of why that is occurring is that the area is losing land used for growing hay to hazelnut orchards. Fortunately one of our neighbors introduced my hubby to people with hay to sell. So next year we’ll be good. The year after we should be able to put the horses on pasture for some of the time and use less hay.

ETA: we just moved here in January so we missed hay ordering season.

I’m sorry, what or who is a “redneck?”

one of the topics I enjoy discussing has a lot of people that object to my opinion. I have been told the objectors fall into three categories. Intellectual, emotional, and volitional.
The intellectual objector might be able to have a communication event that is effective.
The emotional objector usually has a past event in his/her life that prevents effective communication, even if they are not narrow minded.
The volitional objector is the narrow minded one because they refuse to be rational or listen even if they can hear.

A sometimes derogatory name given to 'country folk' with their sunburned red necks from working in the outdoors. It is a term that I embrace and wear with honor.

I worked in a research environment with people with many degrees. Degrees do not amount to common sense and with scientists frequently lead to limited scope of vision. On my exit interview the only negative I shared was that the company tended to equate scientific capability with managerial ability and that most frequently they are contradictory.

Yep... and intellectual ability doesn't necessarily mean Common Sense.....
