Hello all here in Virginia. I am raising some Speckled Sussex and Austra white rooster. I was wondering what kinda chicks others are raising and how do you enjoy them? I love the Sussex so far. Very adventurous and beautiful markings. The Austra (I think) but anyway he is a good bird and I have never had an issue with him. The temperament he has is not good around children or short people. Other then that he fends for his self very well out here on the farm.

Barred Rocks. My first breed.
My first flock was 5 Golden Comets a Red sex-links type.
I bought Barred Rocks last Friday, one of five Breeds I chose to be on the lookout for at my Local TSC.
They are very energetic and some tried to fly at 3 days old. Today one reached nearly a foot high, at 6 days old.
I've read they are cold hearty and will lay in January cold. Got down to -15 two nights last winter.
I've read they mature early. Hens weight around 7 1/2 pounds. A possible downside as far as feed consumption. But good if you will consume when laying slows.
Suppose to lay around 250 eggs in their first year.
Suppose to be hearty. My Golden Comets were not.
The cutest thing is the fluffy butts on the chicks. 20180818_150811.jpg . GC

I have an Easter Egger, 3 Cuckoo Marans, one Cuckoo Bluebar, one Swedish Flower, one Gold Laced Wyandotte, one Blue Favaucana, one White Marans, one Buff Brahma, and one Blue Cuckoo Marans. The first four are 9 days old and the rest just hatched Sunday. I am in Florida, so cold tolerance isn't an issue here. So far I am loving them!

Sounds like you have a very nice little petting zoo starting :) I lived in Jacksonville for a year for work. Cold is definitely not an issue there lol

Howdy! :frow My little ark consists of 3 horses: 2 paints and 1 quarter horse. 6 cats: 3 barn cats and 3 house cats. 4 dogs: 2 English setter, 1 chorkie And 1 morkie. 20 chickens: 1 Lavender Orpington, 1 Black Copper Marans, 1 Blue Splash Marans, 2 barnyard mixes, 3 EE, 1 Polish x EE rooster, 1 Cochin, 1 California Leghorn, 3 Mille Fleur D’uccle bantam chicks, 1 Silkie mix, 1 brown Leghorn, 1 GL Wyandotte, 1 SL Wyandotte and 1 Buffed Brahma.

We have 5 silkies, 2 Red Sex Links, 2 Wyandottes, and 1 bantam Sebright. The silkies are the best! They are really sweet with kids. The Wyandottes are fantastic egg layers, and are great brooders. My Sex Links are running into some egg production issues, but other than that they are the best! We are actually rehoming our Sebright because she acts feral. Not sweet at all! We really hope to get some Cochins next. I’ve heard they are excellent mothers!
