What are your five favorite breeds and why

I like my birds to work...eggs, meat or both.

Blue Copper Marans for their large dark eggs and pretty blue feather color. They are good growers and nice for eating too. Can be a bit mischievous and independent minded.

Easter Eggers for colorful eggs and feathers. I love their muffs, beards and hawk-like gaze. Mine are good layers and inquisitive, active foragers. My EE rooster has a great gentle disposition.

Hmong gamefowl mix meat chickens for utility. I keep a dual purpose line of good layers that are moderately broody, large and fast growing, dressing out over 5 lbs at 4.5 months. I like their oriental gamefowl appearance, long legs, upright stance and tight feathers. They are alert and assertive but not aggressive.

RIR's for a reliable supply of brown eggs. My RIR hens are sweet, undemanding and easy to manage.

Barred Rocks also for plentiful large brown eggs, easy going demeanors and attractive color in the flock.

My blue copper marans are very curious and in my face to see what I have and am doing. I was wondering if it was just my birds or a breed trait. Cool to hear they are definitely individuals.

1. D'Anvers
Sweet, beautiful in all colors, has bantam attitude. Cold hardy low maintenance
2. Buckeyes- lays big eggs and you can butcher the roosters. Low maintenance also like the bantams
3. Call ducks- small, easy to take care of, cute. Doesn't get sick.
4. Turkeys- they are beautiful with sweet, silly personalities. Would be my favorite, but they get sick from the chickens too easy.
5. Ameraucanas. They're ok, I guess. Kinda flighty though.

Do you have black head in your soil? My turkeys do fine but I keep them separately from my chickens because the are bullies. They do share the same range when I let them out.

5. Mixed as you never really do know what you’ll Get.....

RIR = Dependable layer, tough healthy breed and a bit sassy.

The 3 rocks = Barred, white & partridge = Beautiful brown eggs, pretty to look at and duel purpose.

Silkie = Sweet little fluffy butts who can resist! Comical to look at a silkie roo strutting his stuff making those sweet cooing noises to the ladies and a crow that doesn't pierce your ears. Can have a cartoon appearance with big fluffy feet and a the 80's poof on the head.
