What are your five favorite breeds and why

Oooh good thread....

1) d'Uccles. :) Beautiful, sweet, chatty, friendly little birds. And their small size means you can have more of them!

2.) Seramas. For basically the same reason as above. They are so petite, yet have such large personalities. And cuz they are the smallest!

3.) Ayam Cemanis. Because they are black, beautiful, exotic, otherworldly, and very sweet. I am entranced by these magical chickens.

(RIP, buddy. Miss you.)

4.) Silkies. How can you not love a fluffy, silly Silkie? (especially a white one). That would be iike not liking a puppy.

5.) Favaucanas. I know, they're not really a breed. But they are fluffy, big, chatty, wacky and flaky, and they lay a beautiful green egg. Mine looks like a big blue hawk, never shuts up, honks like a goose, and sometimes speaks in tongues, whch s REAAALLLY funny.

I guess I am superficial, cuz I really dig yard candy chickens! :love

I pick out my breeds based on looks too. With chickens there's always a variety to choose from.

1 Easter Eggers. Beautiful birds an colorful eggs.
2. Cochin for their fluffy look and feathery legs
3 Sulmtaler for their cute crests
4 . White American Bresse. Great layers of large eggs
5 Mottlled Houdan. Crazy hairdo
6 . The best for last. Naked necks. The best chicken EVER.
Sorry. I could keep adding many more favorites. Lol :love:wee

Some of those I'm not familiar with, I'm gonna have to look them up. :)

Watching a friend's flock develop, I think that my favourites are the Cream Legbar, Buff Brahma, Buff Orpington, Australorp, and Barred Rock. If I ever get the go ahead for my own flock, I'd be limited to three birds, no roos. I think the Buff Orpington and Brahma would be there, but I'd want the yellowest bird possible as a buddy for my beagle.

I like your choices. I don't know that I'd put a Polish into the mix because they are so easily bullied unless there are at least two to hang out together with each other away from the more assertive breeds. I hear more people say that they absolutely LOVE their Naked Necks (a.k.a. Turkens) that they are a great all-around bird for a backyard flock. I also have received feedback that the Bresse are great layers of large white eggs but a bit stand-offish in temperament -- I like the looks of their crazy Blue legs LOL! I think it's great that you have rare Sulmtaler. I love it when owners choose to keep or breed rare chicken breeds! Looks like you've owned chickens for a few years!!

Your choice to have Buff Orp and Buff Brahma in a flock sounds like a good temperament and size match since Brahmas are gentle giants. Either Barred Rock or Australorp would be a fine choice to add to that mix. Do some research on what birds match in temperament and size in a flock. When we started our flock we wound up having some bully breeds mixed with our smaller docile breeds so we had to make a choice of whether we wanted assertive egg-layers or more docile non-diva hens that maybe were not the absolute best layers but got along well with each other. We opted for a gentle docile breeds flock and to our surprise they were decent layers -- Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, Blue Breda, Dominique, and a couple Silkies. We had Leghorns and Marans in the past but ours were not people-friendly or good flockmates with gentle breeds so we re-homed them after making the decision to keep only docile breeds. GL with your choices!

WOW! Some neat sounding birds listed here. Many of them I had to look up, and now want. All in due time.

1. Easter Eggers. Hilarious, chatty and invasive sorts. Curious and will walk right into the house to check the cat bowls if the door is left open. Regularly check the windows to see what is happening in "the big coop". Feather color and egg variety is a plus. I love the hawkish face, pea comb and neck feather swoops. I think they're more gorgeous than Ameracaunas.
2. Bantam Cochins. The ultimate zombie apocalypse bird. Nuclear fallout? Pretty sure that those little dudes will be ruling the earth and spreading like wildfire. Plus, they wear Culottes. I also like that they tend to stick around closer to home and don't wander far. This works well if you free range, like myself.
3. Brahma. The Buddha of all chickens. So sweet and gentle despite their enormous size. Wonderful personality.
4. Welsummers. I only have one and I don't like her. She is skittish and the stupidest chicken known to mankind. That being said, she is gorgeous and lays extremely well despite her old age. She is a very hardy bird.
5. Buff Orps. Never had any of my own, but all those I've been around are really nice birds. Definitely at the top of my "want" list.
