Hi all! I currently don’t have pigeons but I hope to in the future. I haven’t decided on a breed so I was hoping you could point me in the right direction! I would be mostly having them for pets and showing. I would like a breed that is tameable, friendly and hardy. Some breeds I really like are Modenas, Cappucine, American Rollers, Valencian Figurita and Archangels but I’m open to any suggestions!

It really comes down to what you want! Just start with the best you can afford if you are showing. Will you be showing at National shows? Or just local?

I don't recommend modenas if you are wanting friendly. they are big wing slappers, who are overly aggressive. Figuritas are so cute, I like them alot.

my favorite show breed are Portuguese tumblers. They are a small, hardy breed who are trusting. They are colorful, and easy to breed. The Portuguese Tumbler Club of America is a small club, with the average NPA show having 80-125 Ports entered. Here are some of my Portuguese tumblers.

I think the archangels are a bit shy and delicate, @CCUK has some and could tell you more. I've heard that modenas can be a bit moody like BP said. I've also heard excellent things about owl pigeons and figuritas, and we have members here who keep both kinds as indoor pets.

I'm pretty sure Dutch cappuchines are calm and friendly but I don't own any. Keep in mind of course that all pigeons are individuals but there are certain breeds that tend to have good temperaments.

The archangels aren't as flighty as I first thought. They are quite a shy breed though and I'm finding quite difficult to breed. They do have stunning colours and are always a great looking bird if you wanted to show. If you just want some to fly then racers will be your best bet but can be difficult to tame. Fantails are normally quite docile and easy to breed. They have quite an array of colours.
