Yeah, but how many people will be able to afford to buy them? I think the forecast is looking bleak for sellers/breeders.
Speckledhen is right, we're all getting chicks. But I agree, most are going to be smarter about their choices. I think those who have existing egg customers (like myself) are not going to play around with a pretty bird that eats more than she is worth in eggs. I've been feeding the "pretty birds" for too long. I need some cash return. Those who breed and sell those pretty birds seem to already have a customer base. Starting out breeding... might get scary after 2010.
However, I do also think that we should all have a few dual purpose breeds. Heritage birds are going to be big in the next couple years.
My D.P. breeds are going to be Buckeye's, Houdan's, and Holland's. Just trying to find great stock to start with.
I have to agree... the interest in starting backyard flocks is intensifying, at least in the rural areas. Even here there are some restrictions in the more populated cities/towns, and people are jumping through the necessary hoops to be ready for spring. I just received my first order today, but I've already had tons of interest... way more than last year. Most are for the good producers, though... people are looking for meat and eggs. The Orpingtons, Brahmas, etc, and anything that is cold-hardy up here is very popular. Cute and useless is still in demand, but not as much so. It would be neat if someone could find out what the biggest sellers are at MMH or Ideal.
I know for me I couldn't hatch enough Brahmas last year.
