What breeds is the best layer?

I was wondering, what breed is the best layer? Are the red breeds the best?

There are several very good laying breeds -- "best" can be subjective. Are you looking strictly at the number of eggs produced in a given time period, size of egg, etc? White leghorns bred for commercial production are often proven to be the most prolific layers not only in number, but in size. In brown eggs the industry preference tends to be red sex links, both for the production rate *and* the added bonus of being 100% sexable right at hatch, beyond that, though there are several breeds that have about the same average

I heard leghorns only lay good the first year, then they slow down.

All hens lay best their first year and then slow down. Agree with the 2 above breeds.
