Ever since one of my hatchlings was hatched his eyes have produced a lot of mucus and narrowed. After warm water compress and Vaseline around the eye, the mucus comes off and he can see. After working three days and not compressing, this is what I found. The left eye completely closed and drying shut. After another warm water compress the mucus softened and came off, but will come back. I have an electrolyte drink he drinks with vitamin A, but no help. What can I do?

There's a possibility your chick was infected in the egg by the respiratory disease Mycoplasma Gallisepticum. You can try treating the chick with the antibiotic tetracycline. If you can get the liquid form, you can put drops directly into the chick's eyes.

Have any of the adult flock ever shown symptoms of respiratory disease?

Greetings Nashonii,

Need more details about your boy.

How old is he now?
How old was he when symptoms first started?
Was he housed with chickens of different ages, when he got sick?
Any mature chickens been sick?
Did any of the other hatchlings have any issues?
Any nasal watery/or mucous discharge?
Check inside the mouth, any sore or pustules?
Hold him up to your ear, any rattling or gurgling sound?
Do you smell anything coming from the mouth or nostrils?
Is he eating, drinking, and pooping normally?

If you could upload some photos of your boy, that would be extremely helpful also.

He should be isolated from all other chicks/chickens, in a hospital crate, box, or tub.
Depending on his age, warmth of appropriate temperature should be provided, also, food and water.

Vaseline is not good for the eyes, as it will trap bacteria and has no healing properties. A better ointment would be terramycin ophthalmic ointment, which can be purchased at any farm/feed store, such as TSC. It should be applied at every 12 hours. Because both eyes are affected, I am thinking he has some infection involving the nasal cavity. The eyes are narrowing from irritation/swelling of the sinuses. Keep on with the warm moist compress, as this is good.

Hopefully, with more information, the members of BYC, will be able to give a probable diagnosis. And, also recommend what treatment would be best for his age.

Hope to hear from you soon.

God Bless

None of his egg-mates had this problem. No other adults have it eather. I'm thinking respiratory, as allergy caused. THANKYOU for the advice. I'll look for the medicine at my feed store.
