What color is he?

He’s silver. You can always test breed him to a black to be sure- black x splash always produces 100% blue chicks. Black x silver would produce black chicks with silver leakage or possibly silver chicks if the black is impure.

That depends, do you want to breed true to color or does that not matter to you? A lot of silkie breeders just breed mixed colors.
The breeder said his parents were a black and a splash. Could that make the columbian?
and I’m more so looking for just breeding pretty chickens that are recognized colors. Eventually I’m wanting to breed some experimental colors, but I need to grow my flock before I do that.

also I am getting a black but she is young so it will be a while before I can confirm him for sure, I’ll have to update it when I breed her with him.

A black and a splash could both carry columbian and produce a silver columbian chick. Black x splash could not produce splash, and blues aren’t that light, so I highly doubt he’s a blue or a splash.

You could breed him to a buff or a gray/silver partridge then. Unless you can find another silver to breed him to.

What would breeding him to a gray/silver partridge produce, as well as a buff and a silver?
sorry for all of the questions I’m new to silkies so I have a lot of them.
Also is a silver columbian a desired breed? Or is it more of just a mix sort of silkie?

That depends on his genetics. Like a lot of silkies, he’s probably a bit mixed (colorwise), especially since he came from a splash x black crossing. A cross with silver partridge could produce more silver partridges if he has the genes for partridge. A cross with buff will probably create more chicks that look like him and possibly some buff ones. A cross with silver columbian should give you more silver columbians.

Silver columbian, like I said, is the same as buff except with the silver gene. It’s pretty common in silkies, but not accepted in the standard. Many people don’t breed silver columbians together intentionally, probably because they’re often misidentified as other colors.

Thank you so much! I do have a few more questions(I’m sorry)
What would breeding him to the standard colors such as black blue splash paint white make?

Black x - blacks with silver leakage
Blue x - blacks and blues with silver leakage
Splash x - blues with silver leakage
Paint x - blacks with silver leakage, paints, and whites
White x (assuming it’s recessive white) - depends on what’s under the white
Of course, expect some unexpected colors to come up due to the mixed colors of many silkies.

You’re fine! Ask all the questions you want, I’m happy to answer them if I’m able.

I'm not getting the silver Colombian thing. Isn't Colombian automatically silver based? I could see it being Colombian with leakage, though.
“Columbian” the variety is silver based. Columbian in terms of genetics just refers to the pattern, not the specific silver version of the pattern. For example, buff brahmas are buff columbian, and RIRs are pretty close to red columbian (they lack the black neck feathers, so are specifically black tailed red, which is pretty close to columbian).

Thank you so much! Is there by chance s spreadsheet or some kind of table that shows all the different mixes and outcomes? I’m looking to do several projects and I’m trying to see what color hens would be the best. Like for example what would a blue hen look like with all different shades of rooster etc etc.
