And the products aren't their own! Shipped in from heaven knows where.

I was at Home Depot and the burpee truck was there loading the shelves up again. THey were tossing plants ONTO racks and stacking them on top of each other. I usually buy the half dying, on clearance perrenials for the ditch, but they're had been any this year.

TURNS OUT that burpee comes once a week to supply ALL the area box stores and hardware and grocery stores. They haul off anything that is still there after a week for composting, and replace it with nicer looking NEW stuff off the truck! Unbelievable waste.

WOW! Too bad also bc puts it out of financial reach for some people to grow more than a few plants when buying at full price certainly adds up. Also, too bad that the source for many of the big box store plants are only from a few places.

We buy feed at a country store and they have an amazing selection of tomatoes each year. Hybrids and heirloom. I'm pretty sure they start all the veggies themselves or the vast majority anyway. I know they buy their hybrid seed from catalogs, as owner was showing me the lineup of a certain line of tomatoes he was recommending for my site and the description in the catalog. But, they actually grow their own heirloom seed as owner mentioned they grow their seed tomatoes over there (pointed to an area) as he was walking me to another area. So, I buy as many plants from them (along with feed and supplies) as I can since I would rather support them where possible.

I've never had aphids in my garden here, and I sure didn't plan to bring them home and pay for the bonus to boot!

TWICE.
High winds alert for tomorrow then forecasted rain for 4 days.
I’m really tired of wearing a coat in the mornings.

Last year I tried this-works great. Although I think the recipe I followed said Castile soap, then add a drop of veg oil to help it stay in plant. Well, the spray bottles ($1 at Walmart) would no longer spray after about 24 hours. I think the oil or soap degraded the very thin metal spring in the sprayer part. So, might try the water+Dawn recipe and see if that is more user friendly.

Hi all, late today I think. I can't remember if I've been in here today or not but I don't think so. Pretty sad huh? It's been a whirlwind week and I'm determined to use 1 day of this long weekend to do nothing. That still means I have to do chores 2 out of 3 days. Yuck.

I've purchased several plants on their death beds at Lowes and I have to say, if they live through transplanting, they're great! I have a Yellow Bird of Paradise I got for $5 that was originally $20 and it's huge. I water it just a couple of times in summer. I also have a sage of some sort and a Mexican Bird of Paradise I got there at similar savings with the same results. These all came in plain black pots and said Grown in Arizona with a nursery name.

Cannot know but bought bottles at the dollar store always have used Dawn I was in Valdez cleaning birds treating we used dawn I still use dawn

Good morning gardeners. Yesterday was productive. I picked up 10 bags of mulch from Lowes. I put 8 bags on the paths between the raised beds and it looks like I need 8 more bags. Two of the bags are a different color that goes into the front yard. So I'll be heading back to Lowes shortly. My rhododendrons are starting to bloom and the Lilies of the Valley are blooming as well. The thyme seeds I planted in one of the herb beds are sprouting as well as the flower seeds I scattered in there. I still need to do some thinning of the vegetable seedlings. This warm weather that has finally arrived is really working on the gardens. I hope you all have a great day.

The very first year we moved in here there was nothing just desert no fence nothing.
I wanted to plant something ~ anything really ~ so I put seed from the table queen squash we had for dinner into a quick little bed. It grew we harvested around 8 squash.
Then aphids came.
I was naive enough to think that we wouldn’t have aphids in the desert. I mean we don’t have fleas or ticks ~ right?
I had my harvest so I just left the plants. There were these black and red stripped little catapillers eating the aphids. I just watched them. Then they grew...I ran all excited to tell hubby they were baby lady bugs!!!
The first bed we built was a double decker (wood) for my strawberries. I was hoping they’d hibernate over winter in the gap between the levels ~ and they did (research lady bugs they’re fascinating). They can live a year on their own body fat.
I’ve had lady bugs every year since. I’m so blessed!
Last year their nursery was in the ferns of my asparagus (excellent camouflage).
I know you can order ladybugs through the mail. It takes a year (and habitat)
To establish them but just might be worth it because they’re so beneficial.
And yes...I’ll probably take a picture of the first one I find.
