What did you do in the garden today?

I love ladybeetles. Not a fan of the asian beetles that are taking over, but we still have lots of the native red ladybeetles around. Although they are a bit nippy.

The larva are cute aren't they, in an alien kind of way. LOL.

I found out that a local place opened up here last week that specializes in native flora and grasses for pollinator gardens. Going to check them out in about an hour.

Let home they don't specialize in super high prices too. I can at least get some for seed for my own greenhouse.

Next 10 days-all days have rain forecast. Where is the sun???

My beet seeds...not a single sprout. No cucumbers either. I replanted cucumber seeds a few days ago. Guess I’ll replant beet seeds too. But everything else has sprouted.

On the other hand, Burpee FINALLY emailed me back. I had called customer service about 1 month ago bc worried the raspberry plants doing poorly -maybe diseased. Looked bad compared to the Burpee raspberries purchased previous fall (and never planted but kept moist and in cold garage thru winter). CS indicated I should email them with pics so a horticulturist would get back to me. I did and got an auto response saying “within 24-48 hours” would get a response. Never got a response...so emailed them again after 12 days indicating I was disappointed in their lack of response. Today, about a week or so later I got an email from them...it was poorly written, and indicating 3x within the email I should plant the raspberries. Um yeah -waaaay ahead of you, Burpee. Already planted a couple weeks ago.

Apparently we stole your sun, I check the noaa site for weather and they've had an image up the past few days and for all next week that I've never seen before, red and orange background with a giant sun. It says "hot". I went out to weed eat before 8 and it was already miserable.

I'll trade you some of our weather.

Tomatoes are loving it though, they've grown 2' in the past week and a half.

Yeah - its HOT when they use that icon! We were in Las Vegas in 2017 when they were breaking heat records - so HOT! We had some sun today, but now here come the thunderstorms! We have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect right now, but just a few miles North is getting the same warning along with very heavy rainfall and flash flood warnings! I guess Mother Nature figured a few hours of sun is all we deserved today...

Garden wise, I did put up a support trellis (fence) for the peas that are growing pretty well. Hope to get a support for my pole beans put up by EOD Monday. Might have to work between the raindrops however.

Made it to a new nursery that is a college grad who only raises native plants and grasses for sale. He is using his parent's broken down old greenhouses, but has fixed one up, which is all he needs. His plants are brilliant. Bought too many for the pollinator garden LOL.

Brought home 3 gallon size ditch lilies that were on clearance for 5$ at lowes. They are enormous. I will divide and plant.

Also final day for the lady down the street that grows her own tomato plants. Bought 4 JUST in case mine don't make it.

Heading out soon to get shovel in, despite the next three days of severe weather. Ditch stuff is fine...still pondering the veggie garden....do I wait it out?

Tell ya still raining here hate wet feet do not need anything bad enough to go out of the roads today ran down to our local store 4.19 for a gallon of whole milk we buy 2 gallons at Costco 3.64 sure did not want to go to Costco as it is freeway 30 miles

Well it was clear as a bell after the fog lifted at noon, it drizzled a bit after, but then was clear, hot and humid.

I managed to find a NEW plant nursery, totally by accident. He's a recent college grad (last year) and took over his parents dilapidated old greenhouses, well just two really. He fixed those two, (of the twelve) and is using one for his starts, and the other for his sale area. The things are HUGE. (The others on the property are long beyond repair, 15 foot trees growing through the plastic, all the plastic missing, collapse frames. Makes me so sad as I would LOVE to have a real green house with electric, water, concrete floors, fans vents etc.

ANYWAY, he specializes in Native area plants and grasses. I spent a small fortune and spent the whole day planting the pollinator garden area of the ditch. I can harvest seed in the fall and start them over the winter for more pollinator garden. This is what when in today. Multiples of many of them.

Day 2 of severe thunderstorm warning. Thunder woke me up before 6am. We were on the edge of this, so got rain, high winds, but not too bad. Once this passes, a day full of thunderstorm possibility. Ugh. So. Much. Rain.

Yesterday I trellised some peas. Also need to thin out the peppers and tomatoes. When I started those seeds, I thinned the seedlings to 1 or 2 per cell, then when I planted I left the two starts to see if one would be stronger/better. They all seem fine, so I now need to remove the extra plants. Think I’ll wait until tomorrow, though.
