What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. @karenerwin how's your mom doing? @TropicalBabies beautiful horses!
It's 0400, been awake for about an hour so I went out and turned on the hose and made coffee. I've done nothing the last few days but sit on my butt and watch movies. Today will be more active. Have a great day everyone.

Good morning gardeners. Yesterday was a really nice day. It reached to low 60's for a little while. I got so much done, taxes, voted, grocery shopping and got the frame for the new garden bed put together. Of course my old rechargeable drill died before I was completely finished. But I'm charging it now and hopefully can finish off the last few screws later. Today is supposed to be in mid 40's but wicked windy. So I'm not planning on much outdoor work. I made green tomato salsa verde last summer @cavemanrich. It turned out quite tasty. I've used it to make green chile chicken enchiladas and you really can't tell it was made with tomatoes. Just a thought. I've noticed with the corona virus cases in the US, they are primarily on the coasts (east & west) and none that I've heard of in the mid west. There are some cases apparently in Illinois, but perhaps that's because it's spreading from Chicago's O'Hare airport. We have a few cases here in Massachusetts, two or three in New Hampshire and a couple in Rhode Island. It's just a little disturbing although my health has been pretty good this year thanks to my many medical professionals. But I know I'm in the high risk category for severity of the illness so I like to be proactive. I'm excited to get started with the garden soon. I'll wait another week before testing the soil, then determine what needs to be done to amend the soil. Wishing for the best for your mother @karenerwin. And @WthrLady, OMG, thank you for the dryer sheet tip. I use the scent free, gentle sheets ordinarily. So I guess I should buy a small pack of the cheap, generic ones. Right? I learn so much from this thread. Thank you all for your contributions. Have a great day everyone.

Luv pumpkin pie,,,,:drool:drool:drool First time hearing about pumpkin stew. Is this a main dish meal, or a snack/dessert type of thing.

Main Dish! We got it out of a vegetarian Times magazine (we are not vegetarians though), and have altered the recipe a bit. For some reason many savory pumpkin recipes add cheese, and <blech> we don't care for cheese with our pumpkin, so that is out! We add more chopped red pepper than they call for. We often cook this on top of the stove and therefore, just peel and chunk up the pumpkin into 1-2" dice, and cook it until the pumpkin is soft (rather than baking it in the pumpkin - but we have baked it in the pumpkin some of the times we have made the stew). Also, the recipe goes really well with turkey (or pork), so we often brown some ground turkey to go with it, and often serve it over some kind of cooked grain. The stew freezes well.

Here is the recipe:
"Spicy Fall Stew Baked in a Pumpkin" found in Vegetarian Times Oct 2008.

2Tbsp OO
1 Onion, diced (1 Cup)
1 Red Bell Pepper cut into 1"Dice
2 Cloves Garlic, minced (2tsp)
1 tsp Chili Powder, preferably New Mexican
1 tsp ground cumin
1/2tsp dried oregano
1/2 lb tomatillos, husked and quartered
1 15 ounce can Hominy, rinsed and drained
3/4tsp salt
1- 3to4lb pumpkin (sugar pie, cheese, red kuru, kabocha, or buttercup squash)
2 ounces grated sharp cheddar cheese

1. Heat oven to 350F.
2. 1Tbsp oil in pan, add onion, bell pepper, garlic and sauce until softened Stir in next 3 spices, cook approx 3 min until spices darken.
3. Add tomatillos, hominy, 1/2 Cup water, and salt. Cover, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 10-12 min until tomatillos softened. Uncover and cook 5 more min to thicken stew.
4. Meanwhile, cut top of pumpkin and clean out insides, and rub inside with 1Tbsp oil and sprinkle with salt.
5. Fill pumpkin with stew, top with pumpkin lid. Place on parchment covered pan and bake 1.5-2hours until pumpkin flesh is fork tender.
6. Scoop out with pumpkin flesh and serve.

There is an addition "Poblano-Cucumber Salsa" recipe to compliment this stew, but we have never made the salsa.

What ever is the strongest you can find. If it makes your nose crinkle and you want to sneeze, that's the one. I found boxes of bounce for men a couple years ago, and stocked up. It has patchoulli in it

Carrots. I still have about a third of the patch left to harvest. Some of these will be dinner tonight and the chickens are enjoying the greens.
