What is the green thing? A plucker?
I forgot to mention, once I get brave enough to venture outside later I hope to give the pineapples a look over to see if they are starting to fruit yet as they are due. But that is a jeans and long sleeved shirt thing with our mosquito explosion. I wish I owned steel toed flip-flops. So far it looks like i'll be able to oversummer 3/5 artichokes.

Ok I checked(Late Edit) my pineapples are not starting to fruit yet. The chicken are happy in the fresh grass though and 4/5 artichokes are hanging in there. I do have 4+more pups from the agave to repot and more prickly pear cactus to relocate than I care to see. I really need to get better gloves before attempting their relocation. Regarding the gloves for the cactus if anyone has a good suggestion I would be grateful for input. I still have embedded spines from the last big push, but their tunas really help the local wildlife, plus make for a cheap fence. Also they flower in early spring they are my version of a crocus.

Good luck with the artichokes! I was going to mention kevlar gloves but I see you've found them already. I use them here for bougainvillea and other thorny things.
It's just a thought. I'm sure they haven't been tested on cacti! LOL.
They have been, I use them and they work well.
Superchicken!! I fear the red headed centipedes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scolopendra_heros) we have in Texas. I think there was only a single Civil War era report of a death due to one, but still...... eww. You have to learn how to do the Texas kick and flip in Hawaii too?

My last surprise was just a black widow and dispatched that with a can of Raid. No chicken came to my rescue.
We have to do the same here. It seems like there's a lot that wants to hurt us in the desert!
I went on slug patrol (they are awful this year!), planted arugala, carrots and transplanted my pepper starts into the raised beds.
Welcome to the gardening thread!
Super great day!! Hot enough to get uncomfortable -first time this year with HOT weather!! Yay!!

Planted melons (started in pots), and pie pumpkins. Planted carrots. Spouse has started on pole bean trellis.

started a fire in the fire pit and have just grilled, steak, onions, and mushrooms over the fire.
You can have our heat, we'll be up to 111* later this week. Address? I'll send it right over!
Planted the garden today. 7-10 and see what pops View attachment 2158002
Lovely. Good luck and welcome to the thread!
I'm not so sure that this goes here, but I have been reading this book lately I'd love to recommend to like-minded individuals!

Mini Farming: Self Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre by Brett L. Markham
This is the perfect place, thanks for the recommendation and welcome!
We put out weed barrier and straw in garden. Staked tomato's.
Welcome to the gardening thread!
My garden. I have picked and put up English peas. Pulled them up and planted blue lake green beans in their place. Picking them now. Dug up all my potatoes. Just planted butter beans. I have already been harvesting yellow squash. I have two tomato plants. Next, I will roto-till open space and plant heritage seed Lady finger peas. Seeds that have been passed down several generations in the family
Welcome!

Thanks, AllenK RGV, and Mrs. Allen RGV. It's a new experiment for me, I'll let everybody know if it's successful, or not.
I hope we can start a seed exchange with @TropicalBabies for our starts on those loofa. Not like I am cheap but she said the seeds have to be extracted, and it is a royal PITA to do so. I'm more than happy to let USPS do the heavy lifting. I also have heat/drought tolerant self fertile basil and dill if anyone would consider this as a worthy project here to offer.

It has probably been done already here on ChickenFB but heritage seeds do deserve protection. Additionally if anyone can point me where this post should be please do so. PM's welcome.

Lol! I do like dry heat, but 111F gets a wee bit too hot. Still, Possibly more tolerable than a very humid and windless 90F day. We went to Las Vegas during a record breaking June heat wave, up to 117F and that was really, really hot- I would not want that kind of heat for months on end!

Humidity is something we don't get until monsoons if they bother to show up. You can keep that, I'm familiar and no thanks!
The biggest issue with summer here is that the overnight lows are still in the 90s so there's no relief for months on end it seems.

I can take it all.... High 90's + 90% humidity I just don't do cold well any longer. I have donated those clothes when it was needed. :gigNot to mention they were annoying to keep clean for our limited use of them.

true! The lack of a cool evening does make it seem endless. My oldest is stationed in Florida on the gulf coast, and does not care for the extended warm weather for 9 months, with the lack of cool nights a real disappointment. Of course, there is also humidity there to deal with, not helping matters.

My friend moved from AZ to FL and the first few years were rough for her. That humidity sucks the life out of you!
