What did you do in the garden today?

I did pressure can them but I attempted it on a propane stove outside and temps fluctuated causing pressure fluctuations. I believe this is why so many seals failed. This year I did a lot of Roma tomatoes but am most happy with the few beef steaks that I have. Unfortunately out of 22 plants only five are beefsteaks, eight are a pole tomato that I’ve not loved, and then the remaining are the Roma. Unfortunately the Roma is apparently prone to blossom end rot so I’ve lost half my harvest to that and I have an enormous stink bug infestation on top of that. It’s been a bad year

Blossom end rot got almost all of our tomatoes except for a few yellow pear tomatoes.

All chicks remain alive! Ordered all males. Of course sexing errors happen, so maybe there is a female in there somewhere. I currently suspect one of the Silver Spangled Hamburgs is a female...time will tell.

Cute and chatty! Like little human boys, they love to run! They will run the entire length of the brooder, stop and mill about and then all of a sudden 5-6-7 of them are racing back the other direction, the entire length of the brooder! They run like this more than any other batch of chicks we have had!


Buttercups have that interesting comb. And it is hard to take a pic of it right now, but there are two rows of straight comb coming out horizontally from the middle flat comb. One chick has a wider flat comb on its head than the other, so the points on each side are farther apart. Will be interesting to see how they grow out.

We had a male one about 2 years ago - attractive, but slim and flighty. I suspect the darker one might be female based on size and stance and comb is currently smaller/ less wide than the taller/more erect one.

One of these was a bit of a meanie in the small brooder.....time will tell if he's the first in the stew pot.

Oh my goodness!!! I'm dying of cuteness. Fantastic job on the pro chick photography. Love them all but I am always a little weak in the knees for Brahma's... even/especially the one squatting like a girl You MUST post update photos for us... yes buddy ol pal?!!

Good afternoon gardeners. Watered this morning after I let the chickens out. Everything needed it! One of my hens doesn't like the rooster. He's resorted to chasing her off the roost and away from food. The problem has been progressive so if he doesn't stop, the rooster goes. The hen has been here longer and I'm sure I'll have more boys to sort thru when the chicks grow up. Heat warnings all week I'm over Summer.

The stink bugs have hit my cucumbers and tomatoes really hard this year too.
Last year my Roma’s didn’t do well but this year they are coming in great!

We are currently in the midst of a severe thunderstorm warning. Was wondering if it was going to be a tornado because the wind was blowing so hard!
It just started and the yard looks like a river already!
I hope the garden does alright. The tomatillos and the tomatoes are all really tall. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.

Thanks, Penny. They are going to let us visit her but I don’t know how many times. They did say only 1 or 2 people and only 1 at a time and to keep it short since she gets warn out so quickly. But at least we will be able to get in to see her.
I’m having a colonoscopy tomorrow so I’m going to try to see her on Wednesday or Thursday.

DId you prewarm the lids? Don't do that any more they changed the formula in 07 and it's not as stable or thick as it used to be, the different formula fails if you prewarm.

Did you wash the rims with white vinegar before adding the lids.

Pressure fluctuations if dipping below optimum pressure causes you to start your timer to the beginning, but should not effect sealing success. Only extreme pressure drops should allow for product boil out and keep those lids from slamming down, like flame out or removing the weight before natural release is done.

I apologize if you are a regular canner and know all this already.
