What did you do in the garden today?

Mulch it!
Won't give you extra time, but it sure helps...
Check out some of the "back to Eden" info... It works

I've got to do some of that layering - the weeds are insane here! In the fall it's going to be cardboard and layering so we can have a good base by next spring. Just need massive amounts of woodchips.....

I am trying the Back to Eden way for one garden, But the chips are thin, not chunky. I expect them to decompose quicker so they won't be there next year. It is difficult to get my husband on board for big wood chips. He thinks I will ruin the garden, but it is all sand. How badly can I ruin it?

The other garden has about six inches of pine straw on it, and the weeds are negligible. It holds in the moisture too, and for sand- that's saying something.

On the video, they were pulling up carrots out of those big chunks of chips weren't they? And they put the seed directly in... they weren't malformed.
I think his fears are root crops having problems.
I have vole,mole,mice- rodent chewing tunneling problems. Do the wood chips make it uncomfortable for the rodents to dig?
I might be able to sway him with that.

I hate to gas them or poison them. I'd rater they just prefer not to be there,

3goodeggs I have a huge pile of woodchips . Got 2 loads from the tree trimmers 3 years ago . It is now like potting mix . I did use some as mulch . I just tilled the woodpile area for planting . Lots of bark and sawdust in there over the years . It is true it uses some nitrogen while decomposing but not really a problem for me . A little chicken poo and everything grows great . Oh some wood ash also . I use what I have .

I have too much land for raised beds :p mulch just encourages more weeds...but I try it anyway. I'm letting wild violets take over some sections, but there's still so much ground to cover. Turn around and the part I just cleared is choked with grass, stick burrs and mustard...sweetening the soil and fertilizer has helped with some weeds, but then encourages others...oof. It's a headache. My crimson clover crops didnt grow.

Had a pretty serious storm come in last evening. This of course after i ran the sprinkler for a hour.

Gonna get some pictures today.

I'm a mulcher, this is my first year using wood chips for veggies though. The flower gardens love the wood chip so can't hurt the veggies, and so far so good... Everything is sprouting or growing quite well... Love it.

I like the idea of layeering cardboard, but this last year it gave shelter to a vole, and I don't know what to make of that. The soil sure loved all the cardboard. So do I continue with it and other layering, and just kick out the voles or whatever in spring? I'll be trying to learn more about layerings and lasagna and what-not as I go.
