What did you do in the garden today?

Garden is now hand watered. I needed to give the plants a drink bc another hot one tomorrow. Not sure on chances of rain. Normally avoid evening watering, but I was able to get the water mostly on the ground vs the plant leaves. Not terribly humid out there, so also helps.

Having an issue with the bush beans (for drying). One type is getting large rust colored dry spots on the leaves. I’ll have to look it up. Plants are not dry and the others don’t have this issue.

Anybody have trumpet vine? I like the look of it and my sister's neighbor gave me a large runner she pulled and potted up for me. I'm thinking about planted it by the garden gates and training it up the arbor over that surrounds the gates. Is this a terrible idea? Is it a hard to keep in check as some say it is?

I tried to seed some medicinal plants in my pasture but unfortunately the chickens or birds find and eat the seeds before they ever get to sprout... Among other things, I've tried -

Yarrow
Fenugreek
Dandelions
Valerian
Echinacea
Catmint
Marshmallow
Peppermint

And probably more that I can't recall right now. Never got a single one to grow..... 😞

if you throw those seeds when it is raining birds/ants should not get them. my mother told me whenever I sow seeds I should water them straight away or sow them when it is raining.

The zucchini plants and cantaloupe plants are growing great. Even starting to get some small starts on them. Tomato plants all have green tomatoes on them. The cucumber vines are stating to take off too.
I planted some sweet potato starts today as well as another pot of dill, another cucumber plant, some basil and bee balm. Not sure if I will have enough time to get any sweet potatoes but figured it can't hurt.
It's been super hot here and our AC is out. We have a hole in the compressor. Parts can't be ordered until tomorrow (Tuesday) and then there is no telling how soon they may or may not come in. It was 89 degrees inside the house and that was with the windows open and fans blowing. I think I'll be sleeping downstairs tonight. It's much cooler down there.
Spent part of the day cleaning out a cabinet downstairs with the idea that I would move all my canning supplies in there. Found out that there is NO WAY all my canning stuff will fit. ☹️ I'll have to figure out another plan.
Picked a few blackberries but found out I missed out on the nice big ones. They were still green just a few days ago ( it seems like it was just a few days). But apparently they ripened and something ate them.

I have a chipper, but it takes a lot of 2" limbs to make a decent amount of chips. Bigger than 2" can be firewood.

I have a gas chipper good for up to 3" branches, and a smaller Sun Joe 14 amp electric chipper good for about 1.5" branches. You are absolutely right in that it can take a very long time to chip up any decent amount of wood chips with home chippers. I consider them mostly good for yard clean up of small branches.

If I really want to get lots of wood chips for the deep bedding in the coop, I'll hitch up my trailer and go out to our county landfill. It takes me about 20 mins to pitchfork in a trailer full of free wood chips at the landfill. It would take me probably 16 hours or more to chip that much wood at home.

I will still use my home chippers to clean up fallen branches or when I trim up trees and bushes around the house, but I have no illusion that I would be willing to chip enough wood at home to maintain my wood chip deep bedding in the coop. Frankly, if you value your time at all, it makes more sense to just buy a bag of wood chips at the big box store than to try to chip up a full bag at home on our small chippers. Fortunately, I can get as many free wood chips as I can haul from our county landfill.

My runner beans are dropping all their flowers... I think it is the heat causing it. Guess that means no beans this year. Next year I will not wait to plant them later than the corn. That was clearly a bad decision in my climate

if you keep them alive they will bloom when the temperature drops. I do that with tomatoes and some of them even overwinter.

Does anyone have Chokeberries? I have a bareroot chokeberry that I planted last fall. It's still small but has been steadily growing all spring and summer. It's leaves were a dark glossy green but now they are turning a weird shade of red & yellow and dropping. I went ahead and sprayed them with Captan but does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? It's normal for their foliage to turn red in the fall but not in July.... They have been watered regularly and are in a raised bed with well drained soil.

they prefer cold climate.
