What did you do in the garden today?

What do you do with the mustard?

Spouse picks the raw leaves and slaps them on sandwiches. Sometimes I will too. Or, gather a lot and sauté with whatever you want. I suppose steaming them would also be great. They last pretty well when it is cold - we get frosts around 2nd week of Oct. We can pick up through a light frost. It does not like a hard frost, but it bounces back after a light/quick frost. Just cut older leaves (if they are too large for you - give those to the chickens), and the plant will keep generating leaves like so many other greens.

Mustard greens are delicious, at least the types I've planted. I really like the reddish colored ones best, they get sweeter once the weather turns colder. We ate them all winter long last year, and the bugs don't bother them much here, just a few small holes here and there.

We picked our butternut squash harvest today. That's a full-sized bed, for size reference.

There's some

I have maybe a dozen butternut. They are very nice though and plenty to last us through the winter here.
We'll see how long these last. I use at least one per week to make my son baby food, and we like to eat them occasionally as a family. But the ones I normally buy from the store are much smaller, so I'm hoping they will go farther. There were two more than what is pictured here. I cut one up to eat tonight, and we had one that was starting to rot in the garden so the chickens got it. I'm very pleased with how well the plants produced this year. Not sure I would plant this variety again, though. The skin is not smooth so they are a pain to peel.

Good morning all. Enjoying some lovely pre Autumn weather here. The leaves are already staring to turn. Right now it's mostly around marshes and lakes. Still picking green beans and tomatoes. Although they are slowing down. The garage is coming along and only needs some sweeping now. I bottled up my first batch of homegrown oregano. I also started a jar of dried rosemary. I picked a bunch of thyme this morning so that is next for the dehydrator, then either more oregano or sage. I'll likely bring the rosemary plants inside soon. I feel fortunate that the lavender I planted with the herbs has overwintered successfully for the past 3 winters. The lavender in the containers in front of the chicken yard will spend the winter on the front covered porch. I finally got a ripe fig from my little tree. There are still several green ones so perhaps I'll get another one or two. The plan for today is to slice up more peaches and get them in the freezer. Then, if I have the energy I'll mow the grass in the backyard. Have a great day everyone.
