What did you do in the garden today?

DW and I harvested a basket full of Jerusalem artichokes. I have washed and sliced some to go into a stew/hash with chicken and sausage tonight for dinner. I hope we like them because there's a bunch more in the soil still. It's really incredible how well they produced. Assuming we like them, I'll leave some in the ground to grow next year.

A bit of advice is needed though. I find worms (magget like bugs) in a few of them. Easy to spot because the damage caused by the worm leaves a bruise on the tuber. What can I do to rid the bed of this pest for next year?

Little black biting satanic bugs biting the crap out of everyone. They look like black pepper specks, bug spray doesn't even faze them! This is torture, I can't get anything done outside.
Sounds like midges……we have them really bad and they bite the worst from August through fall. We’ve tried spraying the yard, bug spray, permethrin etc…….the only thing that supposedly works is a propane bug killer as they are attracted to CO2.

Well, the Jerusalem artichokes are a winner here in the taste test. The smell very nutty (just like peanuts to be specific) when cooking, but taste and texture is that of tender potatoes. I wonder if they'll be crisper after curing as they'll lose some moisture I'm sure. I will definitely be planting them for next year.

We processed more peppers yesterday for the fermentation shelf. We also started emulsifying nearly 1gallon of Buffalo sauce. We trimmed out the poblano and bell pepper plants to hopefully allow for ripening of the habaneros and scorpions before the temps drop too much.

Those are minute pirate bugs. They come when the soybeans are dry. They're looking for water to drink and people don't do it for them, but they do try.
I did OK with vanilla spray or dryer sheets last year. Bug spray does nothing.
Damn things. I loathe them. I swell up with each bite like I do with chiggers or mosquitoes.

Adding in: they're brutal in eastern Nebraska right now too as the soy are being harvested.

I don't know how to, ahem, ask this... a nickname for the Jerusalem artichoke is "fartichoke." Did you have that issue?

I'm really tempted to plant them, but my digestion has enough trouble with foods that cause gas.

Their other name is "Insidious flower bug" and I looked them up today because three of them chased me into my car! Ugh. Painful... I'm sorry they cause a reaction for you. That sucks. The theory is they're after sweat, I wonder if a bucket of salt water would draw them?

They're looking for water period. Their habitat, the soy plant, is now dried up and being harvested. They'll chew on anything looking for a soy plant. Now we just pray for a frost. They're worst late afternoon until dusk here, but all day is fair game really.

Right now, they're competing for annoying with the mosquitoes and biting stable flies.
