What did you do in the garden today?

do you know how much corn we should grow for about 50 chickens?
Corn isn’t chicken feed. It has carbs and sugar for energy but provides nothing in the way of vitamins. Other foods would be better.

@BReeder! - good luck with jury duty! I spent a month on the jury for a major straw buying operation that went down in CT a few years back. It was interesting for sure & I enjoyed myself, but I lost all faith in the system. I never want to be a part of that again. They left us jurors hanging, we completely didn't understand the law. We asked for help & they pointed to the written law & that was all the help they would give. I'm sorry, but people study law all their lives & still never get it all - they expected 12 of us laymen to figure it out on our own?? Never again will I do that - these are peoples lives we had in our hands & we had NO idea what we were doing. Sorry for the rant, all these years later & it still bothers me.

my mother is a retired judge. some cases still bother her although she did everything according to the low. she has always warned me to stay away from the courts as the low is written by people and is not perfect.

I've been called for jury duty twice in my life. First time, showed up, didn't get picked, went home. Second time, showed up five months pregnant no less, got picked. Cue the three day trial of a domestic violence case. Easy guilty as there was tons of evidence. The defense attorney was a piece of cake. I don't know if she just wasn't very good at her job and she was going up against the DA, or if she just thought she was "all that," but she kept wording her statements as though they were orders to the jury and tried to play up reasonable doubt. Then her client skipped out on the verdict. He knew.

I think I'm good on seeds right now. Baker Creek is sold out on the only other things I want right now, but I'm also not in a position to expand my gardening capabilities just yet. I'm still working on increasing what I can handle by putting in infrastructure. Fence should get finished today at long last. Dad and DH have been building it themselves. Dad had a quote from a guy for $3,500, but after a week the guy jacked the rate to $7,000. Dad's Italian side showed up quite heavily as he relayed the info. (Much much swearing)

So, DH found timbers from an old semi bed that weren't treated in chemicals, chainsawed them down to a more manageable size, framed out the fence, and now they're putting up the last of the panels. Total cost right around $1,000. DIY for the win. No escaping toddlers! Yay!

Let's see, what else has happened in the last month+ I haven't been on here? Not much really. I think we've been in winter hibernation. We've weathered the freezes handily despite living in the RV, got heat tape on the water line into the RV so good there. I'm waiting for the month to roll over and next months budgeting period to begin so I can order irrigation supplies for my raised beds. We're also discussing leaving it at two large raised beds for deeper root plants like potatoes, beets, etc, and then making more shallow beds for the rest of the space so we can get the garden up and and running with less labor.

Bought chicks on Wednesday from TSC. Had planned on buying EEs but they weren't stocking them. So instead ended up with 3 olive eggers (They're black so far but only have wingtip feathers right now) and 7 Orpingtons. What kind of Orpingtons? Your guess is as good as mine. They had blue and lavender on the tag for the same bin according to DH, but blue and lavender chicks are close to identical as far as I can tell, so I'll have to wait until they feather out to figure out what exactly we ended up with. I'm fine with either, they're beautiful docile birds either way.

Ten adorable little fluffy butts! With no losses so far! :) But they are, sadly, in my living room. We had hoped to have a shed built and ready for this sort of thing, but that hasn't happened yet, lol. So now it's crunch time to finish the chicken coop.

Pro tip, find out when the shipment of chicks gets to the store, then wait at least two days for the initial die off to wrap up. You get healthier chicks that way.

No jury duty here. I might have had a typo in a previous post or something... sorry.

Some of my seedlings are looking thin and laying over and dying. Not sure what's happening... I keep them watered. Lighting isn't an issue and they are not leggy. Some are doing just fine while others have this issue. The air is dry, so perhaps that's the cause. It's also mostly the Amish paste having the issue so possibly bad seeds. Any thoughts?

Good morning gardeners. I also ordered from Baker Creek. Scary world! I’m in for a break and a glass of cold water. It’s warm enough I might swap my tshirt for a tank top as well. The compost bin has been moved, it smells good but was getting a bit dry so I wet it down after I refilled the bin. That one is full, now it’s time to set up the shredder and work on the pile next to the garden. I have a bunch of wood chips in there that need to go out to the xeriscape garden so that’s going to be a slow project after work this week. I love my husband, he remembered to bring me a new hoe. Gotta go put her to work, have a good day all :frow
