What did you do in the garden today?

Nobody was born knowing this stuff, and we all had to learn somehow.
Ain't that the truth! I'm sure y'all are sick of my pressure canning questions by now. :gig With that said, because of the help of this forum I've successfully canned tons of broth, 4 pints of chicken breast & 5 pints of hamburger recently! Probably something I never would have ventured into if it wasn't for this place. I love this place.
Good afternoon gardeners and a warm welcome to the new gardeners on the thread. I bought grow bags from Amazon last year. They were ok. I also tried planting in an old chicken feed bag. It worked really well. So you can save some cash and just use old feed bags. As for leggy seedlings, mine usually are leggy but as soon as they get their secondary leaves I up pot them. They do just fine. The costs for Grow lights can add up and when living on a fixed income the cost can make your gardening expenses a bit of a burden. I’m just going to say one thing about diameticious earth (DE). It kills good bugs along with the bad ones. Just like any pesticide. I don’t use it after doing more research into it. JMHO.
ITA on the DE - I will not use it here. Of course I don't use any pesticides either & specifically grow clover for the bees (all to DHs dismay, lol). To each his own.
I would cover these for sure. I use old sheets.
Yes, def cover the strawberries if they have flowers or fruit!

Picked up 2 cases of wide mouth quarts & 1 case of wide mouth pints - would have liked 2 but they didn't have em.

LOOK at you GO! Easy wan't it? Now you can brown up roast beef chunks and do up stew meat. Add some veg and a bay leaf and you've got the base for beef soup or stew for later!

I start sowing seed mid to late January, Groundhogs Day at the very latest.. I understand some people are snowed in well into spring in some locations, and when it starts to thaw out they start their seed sowing.. it’s hard to imagine shortening an already short grow season by waiting that long.. I used to have 3- 40 ft x 20 ft greenhouses full of plants all ready to go into the ground when threat of frost is gone, which here in NETEX is end of March beginning of April, and that was the process for 25 years or more around here.. until the tornado of 2017.. I didn’t grow for a few years I couldn’t rebuild that fast, this is the first year I am able to grow again. I had some major surgeries and am finally back up and at em so to speak.. still no greenhouse outside, so I built a small 5x4 grow tent in the mud room/catch all/junk room off the back of the house and it’s worked well.. I started seed February 10, and my old grow lights (old t5 shop lights) decided to crap out after 8-10-15 years.. so I rushed to find a replacement and found the led grow lights on Amazon, I am plum tickled with em so far.. and after this week (3 nights in mid-low 30s) I will have everything out besides peppers, still need some time and then hardened off.. but I will be planting thriving established seedlings with amazing root systems.. all due to the $60 grow lights I found on Amazon.. I think that was a no brainer... vs the hundreds and hundreds of dollars in plants (if bought commercially), I have grown from my own saved seed, I did spend $90 on seed this year to ensure I had reliable summer food supply for my customers (I have a small produce stand) beans, peas, squash, cukes and corn are big sellers here.. along with my maters and eggs !! If you are wanting to grow food reliably, you need all the help you can get when dealing with so many things out of your control.. when you CAN control something then why not do it.? that’s creating a microclimate with humidity, heat and lights and starting seed early (or a heated greenhouse) and having strong plants ready to grow when the time is right.. like it or not it is an investment in time and money.. buy once cry once.. if you don’t put in time and money then you will struggle. And it is much more time than money.. trust me

Good afternoon gardeners, and welcome to all the new folks! I’ve had fun reading about all the canning adventures and the new sprouts/plants turning green. I don’t use DE anywhere in my garden. As @Wee Farmer Sarah said, it also harms beneficial insects. I was pleasantly surprised by the delivery of the night blooming jessamine on Saturday. It went into its spot on Sunday and I gave it another good soak today. I also transplanted the six Russian comfrey crown cuttings that arrived today, I ordered the Boking 14 cultivar which is sterile but can be divided. I have decided to remove the rosemary and lavender plants in the shade garden. I have another rosemary bush elsewhere and the lavender is pretty, but not useful for a lot. I need that space for more useful things like food for humans or animals. At the end of this month I’m going back to the worm farm with my DIL to see the orchard, then to their house to give her some ideas for her garden. All of her beds are raised, but she could really make that work with all the animals. I’m going to encourage her to compost right in her beds and let her chickens do the work for her. They already use the goats for weeds lol. That’s about it here, just watering stuff to keep it alive now.

Well, I gave away 4 tomato starts this evening to an elderly lady who buys eggs from me once a month. We were talking about gardening (she noticed the hoop house construction) and mentioned her flowers. I asked if she grows vegetables and she said "yes, a few with the flowers." I asked if she wanted some of my extra starts. She did... Then I mentioned San Marzanos and her face lit up. She was really excited about getting 2 of them, along with 1 Roma and 1 Blue Cream.
