What did you do in the garden today?

Now for something cool. My sister is cleaning out mom and dad's house and making it her own, and she came across all of my great-aunt's mortuary and embalming notes and books. She and her husband were morticians and they raised dad. Anyway, among all that was a tiny, handwritten notebook from 1911 of pharmacists recipes for the apothecary. The guy, who was a pharmacist, would have lived a block away from auntie. It's so cool. It has recipes for medicines for syphilis, stomach complaints, asthma, bed bugs, crabs, rash, toothache, dry hands, horse ointment, pineapple soda fountain syrup, colds etc. In no order! So recipe for crabs is right next to foot powder, next to soda syrup. LOL
The one for bed bugs sounds like it would not only kill bed bugs but pretty much every thing in the house, including people. It used a gallon of BENZINE!
So cool!! Jealous 🤣

x2

I heard vietnamese (pot-bellied) pigs taste different. even if it is true I wonder if I would be able to eat pet pigs:oops:
They arent bad. Much, much fattier and more oily. And since most are 2-3 years old or older when people cant handle them anymore, you get the flavour difference of an older animal. Make really good lardo and plenty of backfat. As for the pet pig thing? No pigs should be "house pets". Once they hit over 100lbs and get ornery or hormonal? You are SOL.

I turned the compost pile and found about a dozen big, fat grubs. I knew where to dig some more up, and get some weeding done at the same time. I got a bunch more and gave them to the chickens.

The other thing I did was start a second tier of string with flags. I worked on that until I ran out of flags. Now I need to get another bags of chicken feed so that I have another bag to cut up. :)

One less hornworm to worry about!

Honestly I don't trust ANY news from any source anymore. They all have a hidden agenda. They all spin "evidence" to fit whatever narrative they want people to embrace. But what I do trust is seeing what is happening in my local level community. It's alarming when the biggest food bank in the area is empty. That's real. That's not spin... And when the manager tells you in distress that they have more people requesting food than ever before and they have to turn people away...thats real. I don't care what anyone's politics are....I can't in good conscience watch people starve when I have means via eggs, produce, and even chicken meat (when I get around to butcherin
Does anyone know why this post appears whenever I access this thread?
I don't disagree with it (in fact I like it and totally agree with it)

I grew pickling cukes this year because I like them, I won't pickle them. I'm done pickling all cukes, they are just too mushy no matter how I keep them on ice or add pickle crisp - I just don't enjoy them unless they're refrigerator pickles. But I love the suyo longs - those are my faves, they grow well, huge & don't get too many bugs too quick.

Haven't caught up yet but thought I'd share a few pics:
